Smile Nice (Very Low Mileage-?) '72 Highlander

Ok, no bashing of this truck guys!! (lessons learned!)
Here is a really nice 72 Highlander on Ebay...mileage say 500 miles?
Not sure about that but regardless, its a very nice truck.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-C-...ht_1162wt_1040
If the mileage was accurate...that would probably be a pretty good price?
(Joes Junk should weigh in on this one)
If its a clever restoration they did a good shop on most patina points, including the box wood and the hard to find Highlander Hubcaps. The motor looks like it has more than 500 miles on it...but the truck is very nice regardless.

All Good

This truck has been for sale for quite a while and the last time I saw it the asking price was 24,500. It has been looked at in person by I know at least one very knowledgeable board member and he didn't get excited about it.

That's what I was thinking. Also the underside being sprayed black. Some people just can't get it into there head to leave something like this alone before trying to resell.

Smile Re: Nice (Very Low Mileage-?) '72 Highlander

Well if someone did some simple attempts to repaint a few things....I guess it happens and not everyone understands when to start restoring or detailing...and when to stop.
I'm always partial to trucks that are very original myself and will choose one over another attempted 1st and 2nd timer home restoration job.
Value wise, there are a lot of trucks out there for sale that have been owner restored......which are very rarely as good as simply original and unmolested examples...even with worn paint IMHO.
This truck is not my favourite colour (black) and I'm no fan of those hubcaps....but at the end of the day it would draw my attention at any show and shine.
Speaking of detailing....I would consider cleaning up and respraying the motor (chevy orange) and its accessories/details...with full disclosure of course.
Price wise.....well, I'd say its worth $12-$15k in a heartbeat (given the homebuilt resto pricing)....but who knows?...maybe $19k is in keeping with the pricing lately?
Nice truck tho'.

Question Re: Nice (Very Low Mileage-?) '72 Highlander

Since it doesn't have power steering, reckon he'd sell the tilt steering column out of it? But after 32 years, the rag joint would probably need replacing...

Re: Nice (Very Low Mileage-?) '72 Highlander

Why doesn't the SPID say 'GREEN' on it anywhere for the interior color?

Re: Nice (Very Low Mileage-?) '72 Highlander

I think it's pretty obvious that 500 miles is hard to swallow. Regardless, it's a clean truck. Possibly even worth the 19k asking price to someone who just has to have it.

. . . .

I think the 613 code is for a "green" interior, some same the name "avocado" too, like the one below:

Re: Nice (Very Low Mileage-?) '72 Highlander

I have watched this truck on ebay before. It appears to be a low mile truck that has suffered from very poor storage. But I also noticed the battery cables are incorrect, they should be side mount, not top. The motor in my 2k mile truck wasnt painted very well either, so I would say it could very easily look like that after poor storage. I sure wish I could see this one in person to evaluate it myself.

Nice looking truck, but people don't understand that the old odometers roll over or they are trying to scam, no way that is original miles
not too many 40 year old trucks out there with low milage

Joe, you're up on these (possible) low mileage trucks...what would you say its worth in your opinion?....is he in the ballpark or?
Also, what else would you look for to check originality of mileage....any tips?
What kind of shape was your dash bezel in when you got it? (still pretty bright?...its hard to tell on this truck)

All Good

It's really hard to put a price on that one. Very cool truck, and interesting colors. But time doesn't look like it has been good on this one. Improper storage can be harder on them than driving them. Again, I would have to see it in person to verify. My dash bezel it perfect and very shinny

I'd say he overcame that with the starting price.

....interesting stuff Joe...and your right, your bezel is in pretty top condition. The question about the dash bezel relates to the chrome where the 'lights' switch is, which is mostly missing...often indicating usage.
However, sometimes people get a little carried away cleaning those dash bezels with aggressive cleaners and it doesn't take long to wear that vacuum metallizing off.
Regardless...it will still be interesting to follow the truck to see if it gets an owner.
Even if 100,500 miles....its a pretty darn nice truck, but maybe a bit steep at $20k

Re: Nice (Very Low Mileage-?) '72 Highlander

I looked at the truck in July, in Eau Claire, Wi. I posted a few photos at that time. The truck has rust damage on the doors as my photo's indicate. The bed has rot near the cab that is full thickness and the musty odor is hard to believe in the cab, read that mold... The truck is pretty much original and the milage I would guess is close to accurate. The undercoating is original. As my post indicated the truck was never in a garage, simply under a tarp outside year round on sandy soil. The gentleman selling it runs a salvage yard, and sees this vehicle through rose colored glasses.

Looks like a real nice survivor. Probably cold winters under a cover in WI didn't treat it too well.

Re: Nice (Very Low Mileage-?) '72 Highlander

Just a few years back I was selling a 69 with 9,600 original miles on it. It was pretty stripped base model long bed with a strait 6 and 3 on the tree. Maroon with a white top, only change was a set of new rubber to roll on. I was asking around 12,000 for it. I could not sell that truck around here for the life of me, always said I should of tried e-bay. Finally sold it to a fella that bought 3 trucks from me at one time. My 2002 SWB with 4,000 original and my 1985 K-30 with 11,000 original. Now I wish I still had them all. No time is not fare to a truck that sits, especially one that is not in a heated garage. Keeping them covered is one thing, keeping them preserved is another. My opinion of this truck is that it is indeed the real thing, just has not been preserved to keep it from the corrosion that you see now. John

This truck has wood grain lower moldings. Does anybody know if this is included with either the option 613 custom trim combination or the Highlander package? I thought the wood grain moldings were only included only with the Cheyenne and Cheyenne Super trim levels.

Ditto on the Highlander having wood grain lower moldings....I know mine does!!
Everything that I can see on it....looks to be original, although the mileage or at least the storage method...is a bit of controversy.
Hopefully someone gets this and does some nice clean-up on it to 'get it back out there' again.
