Rock bumper - 89.00 bucks - what do you think?
I was thinking of making one out of 2x6 by 1/4 steel.
They guy at the metal shop said $14.00 a foot, and considering the little bit of fab work, I though I would see what I can find made already. Came across the Pro Comp for $89.00, and it looks simple kind of what I was looking for. So its for a Jeep, but im sure I can fab up some type of heavy duty brackets. What do you guys think about it? http://www.4wheelparts.com/Bumpers-T...&t_pn=EXP66164 |

I found this guy on craigslist for $100. I had to fiddle with the mounting, add some width with c-channel and cut off the fender horns…
Keep an eye on craigslist…you'll find something. I doubt that Jeep fender is wide enough? I believe this came off of a F*rd CHP SUV, btw.

yeah, its probably not wide enough to go out past the fenders, but I was thinking of trimming them to just about even with the bottom of the grill and lights.
Kind of like this truck... he has a ORD bumper, I think its like $600 or so. |

yeah, I think is one of those i'll have to try it and see how it works out. I can always add to it if it doesn't work. Seems like a good base to start on.

I really like that last setup from tna except its a face welded shackle mount i just don't trust face welds on something that is going to be yanked on i would prefer they use a through shackle mount welded front and back, with say.., a 3x3x1/4in plate slid over the top and beveled to clear the welds then welded to the shackle and then the mount to spread out the stress. Extra insurance can go along way on something that will take a lot of stress. Just me though but i might order one and modify it to what i want lol

that thing will be a terrible rock bumper. thats why jeep guys buy it. you will get hung up on it and bend it in, out, or up. this is the Abomb from DIY4x. GREAT rock bumper.

Re: Rock bumper - 89.00 bucks - what do you think?
I think it would be even narrower than your drawing, this is a jeep on fullsize axles (different bumper, but the width difference is clear):
If you're going to be fabricating anyways, you could look into 2x6x1/8 or 3/16 or even 6" channel as those will likely be cheaper options. If you can buy by the foot, you're only looking at 6 feet, maybe 7 to have some extra to play with. Also, many steel shops have drops that they will sell cheaper, ask if they have a drop pile you can look at. There might not be exactly what you're looking for, but looking doesn't hurt, especially if your dimensions are a little flexible, such as 2.5x5, 2x5, 3x5, 3x6, and varying thickness. Heck, if you like the thin profile of that jeep one, 2x4 or 2x3 would also work.
