parking brake not holding
hello guys. I need help adjusting my parking brake. its been almost 5 years since my truck has been on the road and I can see the end in sight. just need the parking brake to hold to pass inspection and I'm good!!! how far apart should the main cables be from one another? (u know there is only one , but I'm talking about the one that pulls tension from the pedal and the other on the passenger side that holds the rear cable in place) right now they are pretty close together. I have adjusted the screw and all the cables are tight when the brake is engaged but it won't hold the truck in place? should I check to make sure the shoes are good or is it something simple that I've overlooked. thanks in advance everyone

Re: parking brake not holding
adjust rear brakes, all the parking brakes does is engauge them.
little slot hole in back of inspection plate to do that with wheels on and a flat head screw driver. Only turns one way, don't go crazy though, little bit and test.

Re: parking brake not holding
well I amnaged to find some time yesterday to get under the rear end to do some adjusting. come to find out my drums don't have the slot in the back to turn the adjuster. so I guess I need to go in from the front!!

Re: parking brake not holding
I have the opposite problem! My truck has sat for 8 years now and the brake won't come off. LoL. I am going to take both rear drums apart and this time (did this last summer) I am going to remove the cable, free it up or replace, and actually fix it. If I can't get it...to the shop it goes even if I have to get her towed! I want to drive my truck again!
Dad will be so shocked to see his pride and joy coming down the road in all her 1972 glory. |

Re: parking brake not holding
I figured the sane thing Gumby. but not this one I am just going to do it from the front. I just hope the drum doesn't fight with me to get it off there

Re: parking brake not holding
usually adjusting the star wheel will not help with the parking brake adjustment // you need to adjust the length of the parking brake cable to have a working parking brake

Are you sure you have all of the cable support brackets in place? I think there are some differences in years but this will give you some idea what you should have. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1309350537 If you take the wheel off there may be an adjuster in the front of the drum. Be sure and put a couple of lug nuts on backwards to hold the drum tight while you adjust the shoes. LockDoc
