Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
Find yourself another 327 to put back in it, but otherwise, keep it original. It is so nice as it looks right now, if it'd were my truck, I'd cringe at the thought of modifying it.
...there's nothing wrong with having two trucks. A 4x4, and a classic longbed 2wd.

I'm with the "keep it original" crowd. I would love to find a 50th in that kind of condition. They are few and far between... 327's are not that hard to find. LockDoc

Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
I'm with the keep it the way it is crowd , but your plan of the original paint 4x4 (I love the remnants of the factory pinstripe!) Is YOUR plan. If that's your dream truck , I couldn't see a better truck to cut up to make it work!

Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
The confusion is well-founded and chevy didn't help. They put "Custom Camper" on the all the emblems thru 72 (Custom Camper stand-alone emblem in 67-8 as shown above, CustomCamper10/20/30 on the fender 69-71, then CustomCamper script on the door in 72 only. On the SPIDS of some of the 71/72, however, they said "Special Camper" or "Custom Camper" - both were the Z81 RPO. In 73+ they became "Camper Special" - just like ol' Henry Fords.
EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention... As much as I'd LOVE a 68 K20 anniversary, I'd keep it original, it's a very nice truck. Find a 327 or just a crate 350 and enjoy it. Nice truck, congrats. |

Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
I wouldn't think twice about doing a body swap. You have the same year 4x4 chassis. Keep it mostly stock and correct. I have done this swap many times, it's pretty simple and (to me) makes the truck much more valuable.

Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
Wow a CST without air or power steering. Are there any body emblems indicating it to be a CST? I am not doubting it as the spid says Custom Sport Truck, but looking for information.
I voted to keep it original, but I might be a little biased based upon the one sitting in my garage!

Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
Yes, for a custom camper cst I felt it was shorted on the options. However the truck was bought new in Grand junction Colorado, so I guess no real need for a/c at the time it was bought. It does have the hydro assist but no power steering or brakes. All of that can be changed, but none the less it still would not be factory.

Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
Mine's a Custom Camper CST without A/C. The only CST marking is on the glovebox. The Custom Camper nameplate trumps the CST badges.

Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
My 68 has the custom camper on fenders, where c20 would be, and CST on the doors centered right below the windows. If you look close at the photos I posted you can see the badge for the CST. I will try to get a better photo. It does not have the CST on the dash, just Chevrolet. But it does have CST and custom camper on the SPID sticker in the glove box.

Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
What you "should" do is keep it original but a 50th k20 would be awfully cool

Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
Very nice for sure, I would not change a thing but the seat color and like others said find a 327 and put back in it. But you do have a great truck.

Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
I ordered the insert material from SMS yesterday, dang they are spendy! He claims it is the correct color, pattern, and material for the 50th. I will post photos when I get the material in hand.

Re: 1968 CST camper special 50th
So i have been driving the rusty 68 K20 for a couple days, other than pretty noisy I love this truck! But I see the problem with tearing apart the 50th for this project. So at this point now im looking for a 3rd 68 for a cab and bed for the k20, wow how fast this can spiral! I completely understand why some of the signatures on this site have so many projects! I will post some photos of the K20 this weekend.

I say sell me the 50th. I have been looking for one for some time. Take the money and put it into your K20.
No I am not joking either. Kevin

I vote to keep it original.
Or sit on it for about a year... pondering what to do... then decide to sell it to me next Spring or Summer.
