Roll cage builder in Austin
looking to find out how much it'll be to have a roll cage made for my 83/84 c10. I want the rollcage to be tight fit to the inside of the interior, contoured on the back behind the seat, the roof needs to match the profile of the roof, needs to have to cross supports mounted in the center on the ceiling about 10-12 inches apart and needs to come out of the cab either above or below the rear window, not through the window. I want to keep a dope, clean look look to it and still get the functionality of a roll cage. Something like what Smitty's custom auto of Ohio did in a 67 c10.
If you have someone in mind, let me know, if you know some, give me an email address or whatever. Want a few bids on what the job would be. Smitty's Custom Automotive Check it out here: http://www.smittyscustomauto.com/gall... Direct link to rollcage: Front Cross member Interior shot Behind the seat Coming out of the cab

Re: Roll cage builder in Austin
i dont know of anyone in your area, but i have bent a lot of tube. and participated in few cage builds. so, if you are paying for a shop to do something similar to that red truck, i would get out the check book. that looks like at least a 7,000$+ job. it depends on the shop rate for labor. the hoops and the door bars are not that big of a deal for an experienced bender. i think i had the basic structure done for my jeep in an evening after work. all of the detail pieces start to eat time though. going through the dash and kickers through the firewall and to the rear are time consuming to get right. also, the cost of the material. being in texas, you are very close to major suppliers of mechanical tubing so that will be less for you than myself, but last i knew 1.5" and 1.75" DOM (the sizes i would look at using) are going to be in the 4-7$ per foot range. its been a while since i priced those sizes locally. and that cage is going to need probably 5 joints. that depends on how much detail the cage has.
since this is the 4x4 area, i will assume you are doing this on a 4x. if that is the case, i would have a little more work done in engine bay to provide with a good place to mount shocks and roll over protection for the engine. that will add cost, but it really helps tie in the frame as well. the other issue i see with the cage in that red truck is the shoulder bar. it is way too low to safely mount the shoulder harness. so unless there is some trickery in there that i didnt see, that is no bueno. which brings up another point. a good cage builder will tie the seat mounts into the cage. so that adds time. i wouldn't consider a cage without tied in seat mounts. |

Re: Roll cage builder in Austin
There was a guy name Cam Bierman around town that did nice tube work. He had a business called Radical Rides and Race Cars. Not sure if he is still around or not.
Most of the race car and hot rod shops I knew in the past are all gone. Maybe one of the more "hip" young guys knows a shop!
