Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
I called on a local FB group page for sale ad and these are the pix I got. Owner said he'd been driving it until it developed a 'knock'. Replacing pushrods, rocker arms, and hardware did not help.

It has some cosmetic issues too:

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
The owner and I struck a deal. He was gracious enough to hold it for me until I could make the 3 hr drive with my trailer. It ran but then quit. For the price I'll take a chance on it. This is what it looks like on the trailer but I see something different.

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
It has surface rust on the cab and hood but is so NOT rusty otherwise! I don't plan to paint it, just clean it up and drive it. Hopefully I can fix the knock/tick/klack.

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
I should be working on the engine diagnosis but I couldn't help myself. After it was in my garage, I had to tear into the interior to clean it up!

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
Back to the motor. I took off the accessory belts, slid back the torque converter, and RE-adjusted the valves while it was running. No change. Here's a link to the VIDEO of the motor running and related thread in Engine & Drivetrain forum.

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
Maybe I was too quick to pull the motor but I'm certain I will find an internal problem. Could this be an excuse to go LS power? Here's a link to a poll for the group on what way I should go.

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
The truck originally had a 305. There's a rebuilt 350 in it now with 305 heads so it probably has dished pistons in it. It ran smooth but the klacking.
Freshen up with rings, bearings, etc? New 350? LS? Hmmm....

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
It has the original exhaust on it. A small hole in the muffler I could patch. The last full system I paid more than I bought this truck for so the condition of this exhaust makes me lean toward a 350. It's also quiet which I like and up high over the axle so it will work with the drop I have planned.
Most don't recognize the tip as original.: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=620878

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
Plans are; clean it up, figure out the engine, 4/6 drop, matching tires on the rallies, and drive the crap out of it!

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
The wood is soft but the metal is in good shape. May not even need a fastener kit when I do the bed.

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
It has/had a .060 over 350 in it. Dished pistons for the 58cc 305 heads.

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
Took the radiator to the shop today. Hopefully the 'leak' the PO mentioned was just that the overflow nipple had broken off. It's a recored 4 row all metal unit and they think they can save it.

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
My buddy made the flip brackets and the brown truck came yesterday. With these parts I should be able to give it a 4/6 drop. My daughters don't want it lowered but.... meh

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
Picking up a low mileage 4.8l LS and 4l60e 2wd combo at my local wrecking yard next week. Ordered my Dirty Dingo engine mounts. Hauling the truck to the car was to blast out the engine bay tomorrow. I'm so excited!!!

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
At the car wash yesterday blasting off the big stuff. Making it more presentable for the LS swap. Is the grey sqarebody, 83, or GMC? I'm used to seeing eggshell black.

Re: Don Pedro - 83 Sierra Classic brown stepper
Woot, woot! LS, baby! The pellet convertor (or "bed" style) is the big wide heavy flat thing in your exhaust. Lop that sucker out and get rid of it. They plugged up about 10 min after they left the dealership. If you have to have them, Summit sells the much better matrix style convertors for like $60. Congratulations!!
