lowering springs for front and rear
Steve here and haven't been around in a while. I've been enjoying my HD Streetglide but I really miss my old truck. I have a '70 C10 named "MOODY" that my Grandfather purchased new and it's been mine now for 10 years. I originally patched it up so I could drive it for a couple of years and now it's sitting again. I want to begin with the suspension rebuild and my question to all of you is about lowering springs. I want Moody to be level with the fenders just above the tires. Moody will be powered by an iron head 454 / Turbo 350 combo with a 3:07 geared 12 bolt rear. Previous engine made 540 lb ft and 475 HP. Please make any suggestions on springs...pics and links would be good too...THANKS

Well it sounds like you want about the same drop I did , I actually had lowered trucks back in the 80s and had kinda gotten out of it but these trucks look good lowered and you can actually lower them and still have a decent ride nowadays , here is what I did ,
Lowered mine 3" front 5" rear with CPP springs put front and rear sway bars lowered shocks and rear shock relocation brackets also got the adjustable rear panhard bar , their is a debate I think caused by some just not knowing about the front end alignment on these trucks , if you lower one of these trucks with springs YOU CAN AND WILL HAVE TO align the front end , you see posts claiming both ways , uou will se a post from a guy saying you cant align the front end if you use springs and you will see some that say you dont have to align the frony end if you use springs , for the record and I know FOR A FACT ! that thsi IS correct ! you CAN align the front end of any 67 to 72 chevy or gmc truck after its been lowered witb springs these trucks have a very good adjustable front suspension and you WILL have to align the front end or it will eat tires , thats all I got except fot the parts brand I liked the CPP parts I had no problem with any of it but other companies like early classic and brothers and many more im sure make the parts here is mine ,,,

Your story sounds a whole lot like mine. I have an electraglide tho. My grandfather purchaesed it in august 1970 and i have the reciept!
Anyway, I'm at the same point, getting back to my old truck, which I will never sell so this isn't about dollar value. I'm thinking suspension is a good place to start too. I have been researching this and am starting to think I should swap the front end with a newer model that has disks then drill the rear axle and drum to have the same bolt pattern for rims. If you are going the performance route you may want disks in the back. It is looking like rear disks are a bit trickier unless you find a 71 or 72 donor. I think all of this is worth considering now while you are planning. So your question about springs and height, I think a 4-6 looks good and will be pretty close to what you want. There is a tread about showing pics of your lowered truck. It is great at showing the rangeof drops in combination with different rims and tires. |
