Bouncy ride
Recently installed CPP springs, shocks, relocator, adj. track bar on my '71 GMC. 4" drop springs are really soft(GOOD) but it drives like it has NO shocks. SCARY BOUNCY at highway speed on I-95. Shocks are CPP-4095G. Any recommendation on better shocks? Thanks in advance.

Re: Bouncy ride
This exact same thing happened to me with the CPP spring lowering kit.
I had installed the shocks with the body of the shocks up and the chrome shaft in the down position. Apparently this is not the right way for them to be positioned! I flipped them over and bingo, no more bounce! If you look at all of the suspension pictures on CPP's website or catalog they have the shocks facing body down. Hope this helps. |

Re: Bouncy ride
THANKS 19GM71, that's GREAT INFO! I'll turn 'em over this morning. This past weekend I drove up to the Spring Show at Daytona 4 days in a row, about an 80mi. round trip. Nice cruise w/ the 700r & 3.08 gear running 75mph but I-95 construction makes for a lot of BIG bumps. A couple of times the truck would hop kinda sideways, a little scary 'specially the day it rained.
Your red '71 is a VERY PRETTY TRUCK!... might look better if it had a couple more headlights I looked at all your posts. Did you change your rear gear to 3.73's? On your shifter linkage can you manually hold your trans. in first gear. I didn't install mine and can't hold it in the lower gears with the shifter. Don't know if it's a linkage adjustment or if the stock rod is too short. Thanks again for the shock info, It'll be great to fix it and NOT have to buy more shocks.

Re: Bouncy ride
Thanks RustyBucket, I appreciate the comments. I will agree about the 4 eyes thing! I have not changed out the rear gear yet, although I sure want to. Mine too cruises about 70 MPH, overdrive, and 1650 RPM. Its very easy to run 80 or 85 before you realize it. I would like the RPM's to be about 1900 or so at 70 in overdrive.
I am running stock shift linkages with a modified tilt column from a van. And yes I can hold it in low gear manually. It took a few adjustments at the adjusting nut on the end of the column. I did add the 4 speed indicator to the column. The indicator does not exactly match the gear that is selected, but I can manually shift into all of the gears. Maybe try adjusting your linkage. Be sure and let me know how the shock flip turned out. |

Re: Bouncy ride
THANKS 19GM71, BIG IMPROVEMENT!!. Drives like it has shock absorbers on the rear now. When I installed them I used a picture from somebodys build thread for a reference. Guess they're bouncin' down the road out there somewhere. I was so inspired I took my front springs out and cut 1 coil off. Think I'm happy with the stance.. FINALLY. Only a moderate P.I.T.A.
