org. 4x4 exhaust
did the V8 single exhaust have a tail pipe out the back? 6cyl? the restored 60 4x that sold at Barrett Jackson, on the pic's i saw of the build the exhaust didn't have a tail pipe. I am building a single for my 61, just wondering.

Re: org. 4x4 exhaust
The few factory V8's that I've seen have a single pipe that exits just behind the passenger tire. And that was on 2wd's, but I believe it's the same for 4x4 too.

Re: org. 4x4 exhaust
Yeah, mine had the exact same. and I'm putting it back just like that too (235 6cyl). But I thought the 283's went ahead with the full extended tail pipe. Maybe that's just for the 2wd trucks. 60-66 would know.

Re: org. 4x4 exhaust
That red truck looks like it has a straight 6 in it...the exhaust dumps right under the cab....I think the V8's exhaust went to the rear fender just after the tire. 60-66 would know for sure.

Re: org. 4x4 exhaust
TJ--this is suppose to be an org restored tk? it is an org 283 tk. this tk was a frame off restore and sold for i think $57k. I would think it would be correct.

Re: org. 4x4 exhaust
Hi Ron--if its not to much trouble. I am doing a short pipe like is on the red 60 for now. I hate breaking in a new engine with no exhaust. was wondering about the org set-up. I should of remembered you would have some info.

Re: org. 4x4 exhaust
The red trucks exhaust is close. Has a little to much bend in it. My 1960 C30 uses the exact same part number as a 1960-1961 4x4. for that tailpipe and its the original exhaust yet. Part number 3692828 tail pipe is 7 3/8 long . Muffler is 38 5/8 and engine to muffler is 40 1/8 .

Re: org. 4x4 exhaust
But, they list that one for a "Cab" meaning Cab and Chassis. The other tailpipe listed is 92 inches long 2393659 .

I note that in any of the applications is there any reference to wheel base except for the first 2 listings there is a difference of about 15" which may allow for differences between long and short w/base. just curious ron |

I went and looked at several more trucks. 1960 V8 Suburban 4x4 has a full tailpipe that contours the frame. 1961 4x4 panel has the short turn down. 1963 4x4 pickup short turn down. I cant confirm any of these to be factory exhaust though, but the first two have around 30,000 miles on them.

Re: org. 4x4 exhaust
Thanks for the pic Ron. so the berbs probably had a tail pipe out the back (rear passengers) short beds turn downs maybe 60-63? long beds tail out the back?
my problem is the stock y-pipe is in the way of my winch to pto driveshaft, so it's build my own. will be similar to the red 60. I guess it will be kinda stock from the y-back. thanks for all the info

Re: org. 4x4 exhaust
My 62 k20 has the exhaust that goes all the way and exits behind the drivers side rear wheel. It has a 235 in it. There are pictures of the exhaust system in the factory assembly manual. It shows both styles - short behind the cab and long. I believe the v8 had a crossover pipe for a driver side single exhaust.

Re: org. 4x4 exhaust
For what it's worth the pic 61K10 posted is identical to the setup on my 65 K20 long stepper with 283. I believe my truck has completely stock piping with the exception of the muffler.

Re: org. 4x4 exhaust
Not a very good picture but it does show the short turndown off the back of the muffler in 63.
