Replacing Signal Switch in 65 GMC

I am replacing my turn signal switch in a 65 GMC original steering column. I have the switch ready to pull out. How do I move the steering column trim plate so I can run the turn signal wires through it? I have it loose so it can slide up and down, but not far enough to do anything for me. Do I need to take off the housing for the turn signal and shift levers, too?

I have been following this thread, that was a good link with some great detail. I bought a new switch and TS arm for my '66, and will be changing mine soon as well.

Did anyone else notice that the TS arm that all the truck vendors sells does not fit the TS switch. Has anyone else run into this problem. The vendor said to grind the arm to fit..?? I would rather have a part that fits properly. Does anyone know where I can buy the correct TS arm??

Thanks for the help. The only other guide I found had me take the connectors off the wires to get them down the column. I'm not sure the connectors will fit, but I'm going to give it a try. One other good note I read said to check the switch out before you run the wires.

I, too bought a current production signal lever and figured out after I got it home it was too large at the mounting point. I'll be making a trip back to the part store to see what else they might have. Sometimes on my 65 GMC, I have found prior year parts are the correct fit.
