dont quote me on this until i double check, but they are napa pn. 641-3183. they cross to a dodge 3500 4x4 or something. i just pilfered through the book one day untll i found a stud with the correct thread, correct knurl diameter, and depth. then i matched what i needed based on the factory ford stud spec and the difference now that there is no rotor hat in between. these were perfect if a few thou bigger on the knurl

Im wondering if the brake pedal should put a bit of preload on the master or if the plunger should just touch the piston with no play ? My travel is limited just a touch because of the old under floor style pedal and master . If I could preload the master a bit that whould help for sure with the travel.
i dont think i would pre load the master so far as to apply it. if it was set up static at that piston depth it would not drag the brakes, but it would not have the correct stroke for the circuit. i think it would actually diminish the braking pressure. i dont know this for sure. its been a long time since i studied MC fluid circuits.

you have a regular truck farm growing over there! i picked the key up from a local tool truck guy. it was just hanging out on the shelf and i tweaked out and bought it. just for the size of the thing. then i got inside and realized that it was perfect for king pins. best impulse buy ever.

Re: 72 k20 project

since the axle refurb got postponed, on to other things.

i talked with my other buddy about the engine. and he said, bring it over. so i loaded the block up and burrito'ed it. not really rainy season or anything, but if i didin't it would have snowed or something for sure

Re: 72 k20 project

I checked the PN on those studs. it is 641-3183.

parts truck is doing good. it needs some more love here and there. the tcase is leaking and as always, it looses oil. i need to spend a few minutes playing with the idle screws and it really could use some internal carb adjustments to compensate for altitude. i need to replace the front rotors. it still takes me to work everyday, so i cant complain.

that sounds verbatim on what i need to do soon on my ochre k20! I was thinking you had regasketed the tcase already though when you had it out before? curious where its leaking. mine is out the front output seal.

lol on the truck farm, they are multiplying on their own it seems! I did sell a 72 and 71 K20 this spring but really need to be banned from craigslist since there are too many good deals out there that are hard to pass up.

i did the whole shebang on the 205, but i think i either have some bolts that need re tightened or the front output yoke was a little to groovy and ate the seal already. when i finally decide its making a big enough mess, i will take a peek... i hear you on the CL thing. i have to tell myself no about 100 times a week.

Re: 72 k20 project

The engine made it to Windsor Diesel. its actually pulled all the way apart now. the only thing left in the block are the cooling nozzles. there are some real paying customer jobs that my buddy had to take care of, so it hasn't been to the wash tank yet. we will see how the next week goes. i am supposed to rebuild the axle this coming week, so the engine may wait a bit.

on that note, i did press new studs into the hubs. i have to order some new hardware from McMaster and a few other items that i want to replace on the axle as well. then it should be done eating money for a little bit. that will allow the engine rebuild to eat more...

i also got a few pics from Angle Collision. i got a call to confirm the paint code and was told that it should be green by wednesday.

Looks great. What is the plan for the in-cab fuel tank fill hole??

Re: 72 k20 project

Thanks!

I am going to make a dummy. basically cut the neck from a tank and weld a cap on it so no one can pump my cab full of fuel. then it will just look like any other truck with an in cab tank. the rear fill will hopefully mimic the OEM style rear auxiliary tank that was available in 69 or 70. technically not a period correct location, but who the heck knows that? i don't mind the filler shave, but i think having a filler there helps add to the look of the truck.

Ryan, since you know how to rebuild D60 fronts, what all tools do you use? Is a set like this and a bunch of other stuff really needed? http://www.ebay.com/itm/231185666827...84.m1423.l2649

Re: 72 k20 project

that link goes to an error page.

for the most part, all you need is basic hand tools. a seal driver set is handy as well. i usually press in the races using the old race. somewhere i have set i ground down the OD so the dont stick. you also need the spindle nut socket for whatever set of nuts your axle has. if you find yourself pulling a variety of axles apart buying a spindle nut kit would be a good idea as they are considerably cheaper than buying the sockets individually. when you get to the R&P you need a dial indicator with a magnetic base and either a caliper or mic. and a torque wrench. a bigger one for the caps and a small sweeping arm style for checking pre load on the pinion. there are some other special tools that make the carrier bearings and pinion bearings easier to deal with. you can do it with a run of the mill bearing puller but the special tools make it easier. i dont have many of the special tools, but i have good friends! having a press for the bearing installation is pretty important as well.

Cab looks great Ryan.
Alot better than mine.

Good to see the parts truck going strong.

Side note,I looked into what it would cost me to get the parts truck here shipping wise and my quotes ranged from $2800-11k. Really. !

Re: 72 k20 project

Wow. 11K that better have included a nice paint job and rust repair!

i just did some looking at shipping a car to AK. as it turns out i think purchasing a car up there is a better choice. it was only 2-3K from socal to Anchorage.

i am excited to see green paint on the cab soon. i hope i hope

me too! i stopped by the body shop today and it has been sanded. i think he said he was going for another coat of primer and sand then paint. it looked good to me with all of the filler covered up. i dont really need the cab at home yet since i am going to slow, but i guess it is good for motivation.

Re: 72 k20 project

Last night a good friend of mine helped me set up my front gearset. this is something i've done only a few times. considering i want to run drive flanges and have the gearset spinning all the time, i chose to ask the help of someone who has 100s of rebuilds under his belt with no issues.

i got it back home and made it (mostly)black. paint skillz keep getting better

you can see that i put in 3.54s and this axle had a lock right that has been replaced by differential gears. i chuckled at the fact that i was removing a locker and installing a higher gear. the complete opposite of most custom axle builds. haha

the diff cover is being painted and i will install that after some dry time. i need install seals in the hubs and go to town reassembling

Coming along nicely. If you would have painted it pink those bare spots would have been easier to spot. I'm just saying. I noticed the pink rake on the wall.

ha, a pink axle would have clashed with the green paint... in my own defense, the rake was red, the desert sun has turned it pink!

he certainly is. lubriplate 105, always have a tube around. in fact, i had to buy a new one recently for all the re-assembly going on. the axle will sit with no grease in it for a while, so the super dope job was a good thing.

Looking real good. What are you spraying on the axles for black paint? I tried some tremclad at first and had rust bleed in only a year sitting in the garage.
