Real stupid

Sooo what happens if you don't follow the tightening bolt pattern on the head? It was a real stupid mistake on my part. Is the gasket bad now?

Re: Real stupid

you might break the head....not likely the gasket would be bad unless you run the engine and have a leak.....you might Unbolt the head if you have not run the motor and start over bolting it on right...............if its broke now theres not much you can do but try it....

It's not stupid if you didn't know. It's stupid if you understand what can happen & still choose to do it incorrectly....

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

You're definitely not alone

Tightening the head in the correct sequence ensures clamping pressure is applied evenly from the center out. It should be followed & torqing the heads should also be done incrementally up to the final torque spec required. It may or may not have caused an issue. Re-check the bolts using the correct sequence & torque specs. Most likely, the worst case scenario is a head gasket failure so watch for steam coming out of the tailpipe or water/oil mixing where it shouldn't be (milky/coffee appearing residue under the valve covers).

Re: Real stupid

well know you know that you did wrong and what you did. only thing now is to redo and hope it works. like what was said worst case you replace the head. best you redo start and have no problems. also one thing to do. is make sure everything is nice and flat and there are not anything on the guid pins or if you are useing studs make sure there are no washers on them when the head is set down. saw that happen was told i was wrong they trq the head (brand new alum dart) and end up craking and torching the head

Mistakes are the best teachers. It's true.

If your head bolts touch water you should re do the sealer before re-torquing.

Re: Real stupid

Add 5lbs of torque and re-torque them in the proper sequence. I wouldn't loosen them, you may end up with a fire ring that doesn't re-crush correctly which could cause a problem.
