Tow Hook Alternatives?
Are there any other vehicles (dare I say Chrysler or F@rd) that came with tow hooks similar to factory ones for our truck? I'm curious because if I can snatch a set off a different vehicle from the junk yard, it'd be a lot cheaper...
Thanks, Andy

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
I'd think the big difference would be if they would bolt directly on or if you have to drill a different hole or two to mount them. As long as you don't park directly beside someone with the right ones who's to know.
Then if you snag them and they don't work out, you know what they do fit and on Ebay they go.

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
My understanding is that tow hook holes weren't pre-drilled from the factory, so either way I'd have to drill holes. No big deal. I just want something that looks fairly close to factory, without paying $600

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
Can't blame you there, the asking price for some of these "rare" parts has gotten ridiculous lately.

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
My truck had the holes predrilled from the factory...

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
Both Reese and Holland make good affordable tow hooks. You can buy from Amazon or other places.

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
That's what I was thinking as well. One of these days we'll make it out to a yard. There aren't really a whole lot of yards around here, and the ones that we do have are pretty much filled with foreign junk..

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
A cheap alternative would be to find a chevy bus chassis. Here in ohio they are required frt and back. And there are scuds of them out there. Up to 84 (metal hood) they still used the same old cab as the 67-72. alot of interchangable parts such as horn buttons Ashtray assy, guages including air and most had tachs

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
Later GM hooks are cheap and abundant. Only the funky '72 extreme bends cost so much. The nicer 69-72s cost 1/2 as much, easy.

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
I apologize for that! Didn't mean to huwt yow wittle feewings I'm just letting you all know,in my very subtle way (),that I'm sure glad extreme bends don't tempt me and it's a good thing the 69-72s are also correct. I just don't prefer them and that saved me a lot of moolah. I see the 69-72s as far more functional and surely bisymmetrical

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
As far as I know, only '72's were predrilled for them. That may contribute to the higher price for the extreme bends, since not everyone knows the 69-72 is also correct on them.

Good call on the bus hooks though, they could mount to the bottom of your frame and look fairly correct.

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
I sold a 92 s-10 4x4 last year that had pretty substantial tow hooks. For what I sold it for I should have grabbed them first.

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
Ok. Not 100 percent when the guages changed, but it was very late. They still used the 67-72 cowl on the b60 chassis until late 83 and some 84. The reason they didnt change to the 73-up mid size cowl was because body manufactures didnt want to change there bodies to fit the new cowl design.
Remember they still had the long flat dash and resembled our familiar 67-72's. Check out ebay sometime and look at 82 chevy bus chassis brochure. |

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
Edit. I was wrong about the guages on the busses! I forgot they used the dual quad setup. But i did forget to mention most had choke and locking throttle setups that look right and the same ignitions. These maybe a good source of big block parts also. But they were 366\427.

Re: Tow Hook Alternatives?
Wallace Forge, Fox Valley Forge, Green Bay Drop Forge and others, still offer tow hooks that look appropriate.
