Master cylinder change '69 C30

Howdy all,

Just pulled my '69 C30 292 out of its garage tomb. Put in some gas and it started right up!

So far i have changed the oil and filter, the fuel filter and air filter. Never done a master cylinder before. Any procedures/precautions i should follow?

Any other minor repairs/checks i should do?

First off start with a factory service manual.
Review any service as much as possible from it.
As far as needed service I'd suggest performing a major level service as outlined in the service section that will give you all the grease points and inspections. Setting is never good for a vehicle.

On the brakes, if you need a master there is a good chance you need wheel cylinders too. Probably all of them. If it were me I'd start by trying to crack open the bleeders. Once you change out the master the system will need to be bled even if the hoses,lines and cylinders are good. Since at least one old bleeder is going to try and break, look into cylinders and such up front before it is up on blocks immobile again. If the master leaked into the booster it needs to be replaced too. Stock replacement drums are not available as far as I know. If you need a lot of parts, discs from a 72-88 C30 make more sense.

Thanks for the advice Tim,

I received the Haynes manual in the mail today. The manual says to change the MC then bleed the lines.

Im also having an issue with cold starting. It seems i have to pour gas into the carburetor and pump the gas to get her to start. Any ideas?

A Hanes is not the same as the factory manual but is good to have. I am strongly suggesting you buy a factory manual as well. However there are copies that can be downloaded too. They are linked in my signature above, "RTFM" in red. Most are there IIRC you might need to download a 70 for Chevy as the 69 are GMC, just a minor difference for your needs.

Yes I understand "change the MC then bleed the lines". My suggestion was to start at the bleeders and see if they will even open. Often they are frozen or break off. Better to know what you are dealing with before than after the trip to the part store. More so if you only have "screen readers" at the parts store vs people who actually know parts.

Depending on how long it has been sitting the list to get it safe and road worthy can be long.

The carb probably needs a rebuild.

Dont see the link in your signiture. But i did come across the post with the manual links a couple days ago while browsing the forum. Now I dont know where it is. When i clicked the '69 manual it didnt load. Maybe the file crashed?

bench bleed the MC before installing it or youll be bleeding the brakes for days.

ahhh ok good advice.

I forgot to mention my truck is a dually. Does that change anything when bleeding the rear brakes?
