Sources for 3 speed saginaw OD
Like so many folks I'm hunting for a saginaw 3 speed with BW OD. What other vehicles used that setup? Were there cars that used them and if so would they easily adapt to my truck? (I mostly just drive it and am not hauling stuff much) What years were they produced? I have the 7 bolt non OD with my 72 lwb but run up and down the interstate several days a week. I believe the units below are what I'm looking for.
"The GM designation for the Saginaw is SM326. The tail housing on a Saginaw OD will have "R10Q-1" cast into it." Needle in a haystack?

Re: Sources for 3 speed saginaw OD
Might want to read through this thread to catch up on where I stand on these.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=6625706 You would, I feel, be much better off with a later 5-speed trans swap like a T-5. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=482069 Or even a NV3500. If you wanted to keep a column shift look into an Advance Adapters Ranger O/D that fits between the bell housing and the trans.

Re: Sources for 3 speed saginaw OD
Thx for your reply. I had read thru your previous post already and many others on the internet. I really like the 3OTT and don't intend to drive any long distances in it. The ranger has promise but I don't want to spend a lot of $$. Still trying to research the history and use of that saginaw with BW OD.

I think the '55-'57 Chevy cars used them but I don't know if they were exactly the same or not.... I'll look at the one I have and see what it says on the tail housing.... LockDoc

Re: Sources for 3 speed saginaw OD
They used them in cars from 55 to early 60's but they were the old thans with no synchro in 1st gear. I bought 1 at Pomona about 15 yrs ago, sold it a couple years later and that's the last one I've seen in captivity.

Re: Sources for 3 speed saginaw OD
Mine came from the factory in a 67 Malibu station wagon. Behind a 283. Mine is fully synchro

Re: Sources for 3 speed saginaw OD
I really like 3ott also: an overdrive would be helpful.

Re: Sources for 3 speed saginaw OD
I've heard the non-syncro is not an issue since the overdrive can free wheel. This also allows clutchless shifting.
