Blazer tank in SWB

I know that this is an old school tank relocation thing, but I wonder if it is still the best tank to use on a 4-inch lowered SWB truck. '69 Camaro tanks also work and there are aftermarket tanks, in plastic or metal. My budget won't allow for the full-on custom route. So, I'm thinking that a metal Blazer tank kit is a good fit.

Anyone got any comments or thoughts? Thanks.

Re: Blazer tank in SWB

I put a blazer tank under my blue 72. I won't ever do it again. Trying to make a filler work out was a real pain. I'm leaving all my tanks in the cab from now on. Just my opinion.

Re: Blazer tank in SWB

Blazer tank "kit" from LMC, $200 and you get to cut you about 2" out of your bed cross sill for the width of the frame to get it flush against the frame. Not to mention all the other complaints I have read about them.

Boyd welding tank, Standard NON-EFI, bed fill. $349. Drill 4- .5" holes in the aluminum tank mounting flange and install 4 bolts ( in existing holes in the frame).http://www.fueltankparts.com/67-72-s...-bed-fill.html

Personally I would spend the extra for the Boyd tank. I see lots of people buy a blazer or other kit and have to mod all kinds of parts and the frame to make it work.

Re: Blazer tank in SWB

I'd leave the in-cab tank in place and use the $$ elsewhere on the build. If you do the swap, adding the fuel filler neck in a position similar to what GM did for the 1970 aux tank option may be the path of least resistance but upper trim could interfere with the bedside outer hole location.

Re: Blazer tank in SWB

I have "Blazer" tank in rear of my '67. Kit came from Brothers. My rear is 7" down. Ya, as others have said there needs to be some mods made to make it work and fit correctly. Seems like I gotta mod a lot of stuff anyways so didn't seem like big deal to me.

Re: Blazer tank in SWB

I got a blazer tank....... didn't have to cut the frame but did have to cut a hunk out of one of the rear bed supports. But I'm running my filler hose up into bed, the tank lmc makes I don't think you have to cut anything just a hole in the bed floor cause the tank is a few gallons less then the blazer tank and the filler sticks straight up in the middle of the tank.

Re: Blazer tank in SWB

Okay, I hear you all loud and clear. So, it seems I'd be better off keeping my OEM tank (which is in good shape). I would like to do away with the odor of gasoline, tho.

As I recall removing the OEM tank, I can't think of anything except the sending unit gasket that would be a source of an odor. So, I'll check it out some more.
Thanks for the feedback.

Re: Blazer tank in SWB

If the tank is not leaking the odor is coming from the rubber hoses connecting the hard lines or sending unit o-ring. Replace those and you will not have any odor. There are a few hoses that connect the hard lines to the sender, at least on mine a rubber hose from the neck to the tank (maybe part of the venting?). Also check the condition of the rubber connecting the hard lines under the cab and the tank neck to cab grommet. I see no logical reason to move the tank from the cab unless maybe your doing an LS swap. IMHO, there are a lot better mods to use that cash on.

Re: Blazer tank in SWB

The blazer tank can be adapted w/ blazer straps, the biggest pain is the filler neck. Neither my 67 or 68 will drive down the road again w/ a gas bomb in the cab!!!

There's a thread here about someone making a nifty filler neck that hides behind one of the tail lights. He's had other things going on, I need to check on that again...

I Don't know if you have ever seen a gas tank explode but you're no less or more safe in the cab with the tank than you are with it 6 feet away ready to flip the truck upside down in an explosion. You're much more likely to die from any vehicle impact than by a fuel tank exploding. I know, Humvees get blown up in Iraq and Afghanistan daily during peak War times.

Re: Blazer tank in SWB

I looked at a locally advertised LWB Cheyenne Super 72 K10 last night. The guy told me of a head on collision he had in a 70 LWB 4wd truck that sent his truck over the top of the other car and onto its side in a ditch. I asked him if the tank leaked - he looked at me a little puzzled and said "No" - it was driver side down.

Re: Blazer tank in SWB

I vote for the Blazer tank, however it is not for safety concerns. You will hear all kinds of people report problems like filling the tank, fitting a gas filler door etc. It is a customization on your truck, and customizing isn't always easy, but this conversion is. You can go to my website and there is a big write up about how to do it in my how to section. I have done it, and as long as your filler hose heads down hill the whole way from the filler to the tank it will fill up just fine. Also don't forget to use all of the vents in the tank, do not plug any. WES
