Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod
why don't you just shave them and then you will have a set for a 67. shaving them wouldn't cost that much money. More time than anything.

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod
Hey all;
So I go to order my new bedsides from classic industries and I noticed that they were charging an extra $86.33 to ship the 67' bedsides vs the 68' bedsides so I called them up to ask what the deal is and apparently the 67 bedsides weigh more by roughly 15 pounds per bedside for a total of 30 pounds, I think that is way overcharging for 30 pounds but what can I do about it except pay and take it like a good little overcharged truck builder... The only good thing that comes out of the deal is I'm guessing since the 67' bedsides weigh more the steel must be thicker which means I'm getting a better quality piece so that makes me feel better. Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod
you would think that the 67 would be lighter, for the side lights. well who knows.

I am very happy about that because too often today we see cheap parts made in china that are thinner and flimsier and don't even come close to meeting the manufacturing specifications of the original parts. |

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod
The other day when I was looking through both the LMC and Classic Industries catalog I noticed you can get a OER tailgate now that is manufactured to exact GM specifications so it doesn't dent easily like the old reproductions used to and the best part is it's only $300 where as if if you can find an original in excellent condition that needs no work they want $400-500 for it, but why spend that much when you can buy a reproduction that is perfect in every way including durability for much less?

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod
Hey all;
I started to tackle the wheel houses, they aren't too bad for what I paid for them, they have a little bit of pitting and the usual dents and dings you would expect to find on a 45 year old part but there is no through rust and they are definitely usable. I put the polycarbide disk on the side angle grinder and went after the worst spots and the metal cleaned up decent but they will need more work to get them to where they are nice, so I sprayed some primer and sealer on them and called it a day for now, this will keep them from deteriorating further until I am ready for them. there's no dent on that wheel well that can't be fixed. It looks real solid from here. Good luck. George

It just occurred to me that I'm going to have to rename my build because the truck is no longer a stepside, fun fun.

Hey all;
Since I decided to go with a 1967 Fleetside bed instead of a Stepside I put some Misc step/fleet bed parts up on the parts board, some polished stainless and custom pieces take a look if you are interested. Last edited by Xeen; 06-20-2014 at 03:51 AM. |

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod
Hey all;
After much deliberation years of it in fact I have decided to paint the truck black. There are many reasons but the one highest on the list is if anything ever happens and the body has to be repaired there is no color matching required because black is black and it can be panel painted without any mismatching issues. The second reason is because black is beautiful and never goes out of style. The one and only downside to black is in the summer it get's hotter than any other color but all that means is the Vintage Air system will have to do it's job well. |

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod
Unless you're using a straight black toner, black isn't black. There are literally hundreds of blacks to choose from. They are much harder to tell the difference and easier to blend than other colors though.
It will look awesome in black, as most vehicles do. Nice choice!

Re: 1968 Chevrolet SWB Stepside Restomod
Hey all;
I Painted the 72' rear intermediate cross member today. What I really wanted to do is the the rear disk installation but 87 degrees in direct sunlight is no fun at all so that will have to wait for a cooler day. Last edited by Xeen; 06-22-2014 at 12:58 PM. |
