Between frame gas tank for 3/4 ton, 36 or 3600?

Hi guys,

I'm toying with the idea of removing the in-cab gas tank on my '58 36 (3/4 ton, longbed) and replacing with a between the frame tank. The problem is none of the ready made tanks that I can find online will fit a 3/4 ton, they are all designed for 1/2 ton frames (not sure the size/dimension difference).

Has anyone done this with their 3/4? If so, what did you use? One of the guys at the local parts shop said he thought he heard of people using Mustang or Impala tanks, but he couldn't recall for sure.... If all else fails I can get something custom fabbed up, just would rather use an 'off the shelf' part if possible. Thanks all!

Re: Between frame gas tank for 3/4 ton, 36 or 3600?

Did some more digging and came across this old thread:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=396325

I'll have to take some measurements tomorrow to see how this might work for the 3/4 ton longbed, but if the idea holds I can probably rig something up with the mustang tank for far cheaper than ordering something from a catalog (if it can even be found). Hoping someone out there has done it on their longbed and can lend advice.....

I have a 36, but I'm not staying anywhere near stock. I cut out the old shock crossmember yesterday, and replaced with a 1.75" tube for the coil overs. Next I'm removing the rear crossmember and using this tank I think, I like the in tank pump setup: http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...rod/prd121.htm

Not sure how it would fit with all crossmembers in place but I'm running a 4-link so I don't need the crossmember where the rear leaf hangers attach.

Take a look at 67/72 Suburban tanks if you would rather have the filler on the side or in the fender rather than in the floor of the bed. The one that one ton of fun showed should work well too.

Yeah I'm planning a fender fill also

Yea, suspension is stock so the cross member would be an issue for me. Also, was hoping to keep existing filter location, so not sure about how to possibly rig that up... More and more reason to maybe have something custom welded up?

Re: Between frame gas tank for 3/4 ton, 36 or 3600?

Not certain how different the TF frames are from the AD's, but here is my '54 3/4 ton. I searched all over for a tank, and found about 3 that would fit. Finally got one from an early 90's Suzuki sidekick. If I remember right, a samurai tank also fits, and maybe a Geo metro.
I did replace my rear cross member, so that may have limited me by a couple inches, but the frame rails are so narrow, and I didn't want the tank to hang down too low.

Re: Between frame gas tank for 3/4 ton, 36 or 3600?

the 55-59 3200 1/2 t, lwb frame is the same frame as the 3600 frame according to the factory assembly manual
you can buy any tank for a 3100 and mount it on a 3600

i bought a tank from no limit, they offer a notched 16 gal that needs no mods
or a 20 gal that needs the rear x-member moved back

Re: Between frame gas tank for 3/4 ton, 36 or 3600?

@ogre - ok, that would make sense, I figured it was more the long bed issue than the fact that it was a 3/4 ton... all of the tank kits/catalog stuff I've seen just specifically says 'does not fit 3/4 ton'. I'll check out No Limit, sounds like it might be a winner; but I like Hogger's idea too - most likely much cheaper!

Did you ever find a tank? I have a '56 3600 that I am going to run a tank between the rear frame rails also.

Are you carb or EFI? Most of the mustang tanks I see say they are for EFI only. I am running a carb.

I was looking up a rear mounted tank for the '54 we're building just this morning. Brother's is having a pretty good sale on the rear mounted steel tanks, filler necks and senders from now until Oct 31.

Rics Tanks here in El Paso made mine. They are stainless steel and a perfect fit. They are sold thru Summit, Jegs or direct, their number is: 915.760.4388
They will do it either carb or efi, but they are proud of them.
I put one in a 47 3/4t

I had to put my project on hold, so I never did find one... looks like the other suggestions are pretty good though. If I had the money right now, that's what I'd be looking at. Good luck!

WOAH... they look great but $1000 for a fuel tank? WTF

I am looking at the mustang tank set ups since I want to spend less than $300. Just trying to figure out if it will fit between the crossmembers without moving or flipping them. Hollister Road may be able to help me.

Re: Between frame gas tank for 3/4 ton, 36 or 3600?

Here's what I did for my 3200 89" long bed:

It's from Tanks, Inc.

http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...prod/prd73.htm

It's perfect for those that don't want to fill from the bed.

What I did for my fill was to cut out the original flange in the cab and found a place on the rear fender with a similar curve and welded the flange in there.

I also tucked this tank in up as high as I could for clearance:

Re: Between frame gas tank for 3/4 ton, 36 or 3600?

roger has a good idea to put the filler on top of the fender
i put mine in the side of the fender while it was on sawhorses and 4 feet in the air
now that it is on truk the filler is about 20'' off the ground and 8'' above the tank fill neck
it makes for a slow fill tank while bent over really far

Just got my tank put in my 51 3100 build. I don't know the differences between frames, but hopefully this will help.

doesn't really matter. just run a return line, and regulate the pressure down to where you need it with a return-style fuel pressure regulator for a carburetor.
