Re: 67 3/4 ton to 1 ton conversion
if you are looking for the upgrade to achieve disc brakes, you can upgrade to 71/72 one ton suspension and do the same within the same suspension and body style..this would also in able you to add a heavier duty sway bar and power steering!

Re: 67 3/4 ton to 1 ton conversion
Youll probably be dollars and sense ahead if you hunt for an entire 74-87 (bit later on the burbs) 1 ton frontend assembly (crossmember, A-arms, spindles, rotors, calipers etc), and bolt it under your 67. The JL8 option began on the 1 tons in 74 (not sure why not 73) giving you the bigger 1.50" thick rotors and 3 1/8" diam. piston calipers. These square bodies also had the bigger 1.25" diam sway bars. 74-77 was SAE thread fasteners, afterwhich they adopted metric ..not a big deal breaker either way, the wheel studs remained SAE. 1 ton 2WD Dually trucks (DRW) were, and still are, more plentiful than 1 ton 2WD single rear wheel (SRW) trucks, and they used the same front spindles, calipers and all as the SRW - only the rotor itself was different. Probably a bit easier to still find a square body setup over a 72 and earlier setup too, since there were a heap-load more of them built. Happy hunting
PS. The 1 ton SRW trucks in the square body years could be optioned with the "big boy" JL8 equipment, but most had the standard JL7 3/4 ton equipment (more akin to 1/2 ton hardware). Lots of misinformation out there, especially by junk yard workers on the telephone who don't know what they're selling or the difference b/n them, so they list applications as 3/4 ton AND 1 ton ...big red flag. So make sure you see pics if you're sourcing used parts remotely. Another benefit of hunting for a Dually setup - those were all JL8. Last edited by viking427; 06-19-2014 at 10:07 PM. |
