That would be very nice!
Here is a concept ride for my dogs of a 4x4 converted 1-ton frame, under a panel with the 133" wheelbase, resulting in a short rear overhang. It really needs a Con-Ferr Porthole to finish it off though.

Re: 1971 k30 LS3 500hp 4l80e, 205, Dana 70f, 14bff,

Sorry to be cryptic. Con-Ferr was a big off road parts supplier here in Burbank, CA. One of their signature products was the HD porthole roof rack. So named for the round holes in the upright plating.
They are long gone as a company but the racks live on as Diamonds.

I will have to see if the 73-87 suburban full size safari rack will fit the 71 burb as I have one.

The 1971 burb as a k30 with full length safari roof rack, 6" lift, 35" bfg's, a snorkel, rock grinder front and rear bumpers and rock grinder side bars. With my k30 running gear... Bad to the bone!!!!

Re: 1971 k30 LS3 500hp 4l80e, 205, Dana 70f, 14bff,

Funny. I remember those racks, and the shackles they made from back when i could only think about kaiser trucks with buick engines... but in this case I was scratching my head (since I forgot about those racks) thinking "i dont recal con-ferr making portal axles"

Btw this thread has a lot of good ideas in it. Thanks for posting. And I would love that burb/panel in a 69 70 M/Y.

Re: 1971 k30 LS3 500hp 4l80e, 205, Dana 70f, 14bff,

I have the 14bff with disc conversion already... But ran across a Dana 70hd rear srw with my same gear ratio 4.10 for 100.00. I have read the specs on both and the 70 is a bit beefier but 14bff are plentiful and cheap too. Any thoughts? Yes the 70 will cost me a grand by the time you put new spicer bearings seals and Detroit in it. I would reuse the disc kit from the 14b and just make new brackets from some .500 but then I would have dana 70's front and rear. Any thoughts?

Re: 1971 k30 LS3 500hp 4l80e, 205, Dana 70f, 14bff,

It would sure be beefy, but isn't the 14 already ready to roll? Maybe you could sell it and make back some of your $ to build the rear 70?

Re: 1971 k30 LS3 500hp 4l80e, 205, Dana 70f, 14bff,

As far as the gears go, the eaton HO52 is stronger than the 14 bolt and a standard dana 70 but not sure about the HD. Its hard to beat the eaton pinion bearing support design but that 70HD sure seems nice and the way to go if you have huge payloads but not huge torque. It has the beefy tubes. At least with standard 70,s the weak point seems to be the gears. There is a thread on pirate4x4 that really made me respect the HO52/72 even more. They concluded the HO52 was stronger, lighter, better ground clearance than the 14 bolt ff. Ive got a Dana 70 here with destroyed gears that was in a 90 stockish cummins. Dodge abandoned the 70 and went up to the 80 in later years as the disel torque got crazy. If the gears arent stronger than a reg duty Dana 70, I,d stick with the 14bff or HO52. Id still buy that HD 70 since the price is so good! Any way you go, they,re all good axles for a gas application. Just my opinion.

For inspiration, a while back there was this Suburban for sale on eBay. IIRC, it was sporting 1 ton drivetrain.
