1970 c20 rear disc brake swap
I have got my hands on a front end from a 72 chevy c20 to do the front disk brake swap on my 70 c20. But now im wondering what my options are for the rear drum brakes. Is there a kit I can get to convert the rear also? The rear is drum with 4.10 gearing.
Thanks, paul |

Do you just want the rear disks for grins? The front disk in conjunction with the power booster should get that truck to stop admirably.

Re: 1970 c20 rear disc brake swap
Just search the archives here with keywords "C20", "rear", "disc" ..lots of info back there about rear disc conversions for C/K20 & C/K30. The low-buck DIY kits use the 1973+ slip-off K20 front rotors in conjunction with the 1976/77/78 Cadillac ElDorado calipers (large enough to fit over the K20 1.25" thick rotors) ..assuming you can still find a set. There's actually a new DIY kit out now using a bracket that accomodates the later model rotors with the "drum in rotor" style parking brake;

Re: 1970 c20 rear disc brake swap
Looks like if I go to rear disc I will have to get different rims. From my review of posts it seems that there is no way to keep the 8 lug rim size that I have now. Does that sound right?
thanks |

Re: 1970 c20 rear disc brake swap
You'll need at least 16" dia. wheels to fit the factory gm 71-87 3/4 and 1 ton rotors, since they're about 12.5" in dia. + the caliper thickness. This would include the K20 rotors with the Cadi. calipers. Not sure about the late model drum-in-rotor hardware.

Re: 1970 c20 rear disc brake swap
My current rims are 16.5, 8 lug. Dont think they will work with the rear disc upgrade.
thanks |

Re: 1970 c20 rear disc brake swap
i have a disc upgrade on my rear axle and 16" wheels fit fine. so your 16.5's should work just fine as well.

Re: 1970 c20 rear disc brake swap
Did front disc conversion only on my 69 C20. Stops great. Not really considering doing rears at this point. However, there are kits out there for us 8-luggers. Check out Blackbird Customs.
