1967 - 1968 - Early 1969 bezel questions

OK ye of wealthful knowledge. I have some questions to clear up a mystery on 67/68/early69? cluster bezels.

In the photos I provided, there are 3 different bezels. The one on the top (all black) has 3 small holes for the switches. On the left is "WIPERS" and "LIGHTS" and on the right is "CHOKE" all of these have a small raised pad with the lettering on top of the pad like most.

The next one down has "WIPER-WASHER" instead of "WIPER but is otherwise identical.

The third one down is the real oddball. It has "WIPER-WASHER" but has no small black pad on the right side for "CHOKE". There is nothing more than a hole in it. The other interesting thing on the third bezel is that the holes for the gauges has the raised trim rim like 70-72 and the top two do not have the raised rim around the gauge holes.

I maybe wrong in what I think is early 69 also. Was the bezel with just a hole for a throttle cable?

Thoughts? I know what I think but looking for factual evidence to prove what I think.

Please ask questions and add knowledge to this thread.

Thank you,
Tom

Re: 1967 - 1968 - Early 1969 bezel questions

I think that the bezels with the unmarked hole on the right side had the GM choke delete if the truck had an auto transmission and had a choke insert otherwise...let's hope some SMEs chime in!

Re: 1967 - 1968 - Early 1969 bezel questions

Tom the the smooth one is as stated either a 67 or 68 that had the 327 or if 68 327 or 396 which had a divorced choke and got the choke delete plug- which were at least offered in three different forms, a chrome plain plug, a black plug and the GM marked plate. The other two are 67 and 68 respectively

Thank you Harold. So the 67 is "WIPERS" and 68 is "WIPER-WASHER", correct?
67-68 with 327 and 68 with 396 got smooth hole with a delete plate, correct? So GM used two different bezels in 67-68 depending on engine?

1969-1972 were "LIGHTS" on the left and "WIPER-WASHER" and no variation from that on those 4 yrs?

No we are getting somewhere. I am interested in photos of oddball bezels such as "THROTTLE" or anything else that is factory and different from the norm.

Thank you,
Tom

Re: 1967 - 1968 - Early 1969 bezel questions

So where does this fit in? It came on my '68 with a 307 / Powerglide / 2 bbl. It went on the passenger side hole.

I'd like to come to a consensus and add this to the "differences" thread.

Good deal, lets keep it up. I love gauge cluster education and specific year bezels have always been a concern when I do a restoration.

Anyone else have something to share?

Take care,
Tom

That is another unique one and it looks like it fits over one that already has the raised pad. I can see that it has an offset where the word "CHOKE" is. That is not an accident.

What did the bezel look like under this plate?

Good stuff

Re: 1967 - 1968 - Early 1969 bezel questions

Tom the choke label was for sure a 68 thing, with 307 engine. To my knowledge the wiper label was a 67 only and the 68 was the last year of wiper switch on the left

Re: 1967 - 1968 - Early 1969 bezel questions

My 68 GMC CST 3 hole [speed warning cluster] had the hole in the upper right hand corner and it had the choke delete plug that said delete on the plug if I recall. It is out in the truck in the console of the buddy bucket seat[ I think that is where I put it]. I have bout a tach vac dash that was fresh and stuck in there and also have anther that needs reworked I thought about having somebody putting the speed warning speedometer in the other cluster when freshening up so that truck can have tac vac speed warning. I know there are some out there but not a bunch. Jim

Jim,

Let me know if you need me to help you get the speedwarning/tach/vac cluster set up for you. I have done a few like this for others. I am building one up now for another customer and will build one for my truck soon as well. I also have any parts you may need.

Thanks for your input on the thread.
Tom

Re: 1967 - 1968 - Early 1969 bezel questions

The CHOKE plate was there for a long time. The bezel had faded around it. My choke cable was an aftermarket, so I can only guess the plate was made to fit (with the flat spot) over the original choke cable. If you look closely, it looks like the bezel (pictured above) with THROTTLE on it is also a plate like mine.

Since I installed an Edelbrock 1406, I am now using that hole for a wiper delay switch I got from Twouvakind. I drilled a wiper knob out a little and it almost looks stock. I was thinking of getting one of those 3D printing places to make me a plate like the one that says CHOKE and have them make it say DELAY.

TBONE, I am going to have you make me a cluser at some point. Can you get bezels with the plain hole on the right, so I can do my little DELAY mod? The one I will have you build will be a tach, most likely, if that matters.

Here is the one in my original, unmolested '68 CST/Custom Camper. It has the choke delete with the blank plastic that covers up the word "choke" on the bezel.

This is good stuff and some of the mystery's of these different bezel configurations are starting to make more sense now.

As far as an aftermarket bezel with the plain hole on the right, not available in aftermarket. There are some options. If you want it painted argent silver on the trim, I can restore your original or one I have in my inventory. If you want chrome trim, I could possibly modify an aftermarket bezel to accommodate your "DELAY" plate.

I loke that idea. It will appear as factory if you can find the right person to modify it.

I can build you up a tach cluster when ever you are ready.

Thank you for the input,
Tom
