225/75 tires on 16x5 wheels - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I like the factory look but always thought the 15" wheels were too small so I picked up a set of factory GM 16x5 wheels. I gave them a shot of Rustoleum Ivory Bisque because its pretty darn close to the factory color and mounted 225/75/16 E rated tires because I have a slide in camper, oh, and 200 bucks for four new tires was hard to pass up. To me the tires look like they fit great but I have read the 225's shouldn't be mounted on 5" wheels. Anybody out there running this wheel/tire combo?

Pretty sure you'll be fine. They use to run 225/75/15 pasenger on 5" car and truck.

It looks like your rear end is sitting a little forward in the wheel well. Do you have trailing arm suspension?

What brand of tires did you get. $200 is a good deal.

A quick check on http://www.tirerack.com/index.jsp shows that size should be on a 6" - 7" rim. Not saying you can't run 'em on a 5" rim but it's not advised. In reality you're just pulling each bead in 1/2" more than recommended. Could possibly increase center tread wear a bit, so you might want to keep an eye on that.

It is trailing arm, must be a weird camera angle. The tires are Nexen Roadian. I found a great source for tires at Uhaul. They signed a contract with Michelin I think, and weren't able to use other brands on the trucks so they had several new tires to sell, including some sweet Firestone Transforce that I didn't have enough cash for at the time.

I've got 235/75/16's on my 16x5's. There are lots of folks that run 235/85/16's on those wheels with no issues.

These wheels can be found in both 5 lug and 6 lug. I know the 6 lug ones were an option from 63 to 70...ones from these years will have 3 nubs. I also think 6 lug was an option 71 up on 4WD, which I'm assuming should have 4 nubs. The ones from the original poster appear to be from '71 and up because the older ones I have look a little different.

My reply is regarding the 16" wheels. The 16x5's I have on my truck is the style that was used from 63-70. The style he has was used later....I'm assuming starting in '71. The 16x5 wheel was an option for many years, but wasn't very common.

Interesting! Had no idea the 16 was so common. That brings up the next question: The 3-nub 15's won't clear a disc brake... what about the 16?

Yes, I have the 3 nub version with McGaughys disc brake conversion on mine. I wouldn't say "common," because it took me quite a while to find a set.
