Tachometer question
I am looking to find out if there is any way to tell where the pointers on the factory tach would have been set from the factory. I have bought and used aftermarket tachs in the past but not sure if they are set correctly. Would this also depend on engine size?
I have a customer that is doing a 100 point factory restoration and would like the pointers on the tach in the correct position. Any photos from factory gauge set ups would also be nice if possible. Thank you in advance, Tom

Re: Tachometer question

Re: Tachometer question
Excellent. Thank you so much for the information. Very nice clusters too by the way. Would you believe that the factory would set the low and high markers different for a 6 verses an 8 cylinder? The aftermarket one I buy for a V8 is set at 3000 and 4800. Not sure if that is correct for a V8 or not.
Thanks again, Tom

Re: Tachometer question
60-66, did you have to do anything special to get the factory tach to work with your 6 cylinder? i want to add a tach to my new gauge cluster when I install it, but they all seem to say for V8 only. I am wondering if maybe a Tach Adapt would let me use one with my 230.

Re: Tachometer question
No, this tach was installed at the factory in 1966. But , any factory 64-66 Sun tach will work in your truck but a V8 tach is calibrated differently than a 6 cyl. The original Sun tachs will say on the back 6 or 8 cyl . I will try and get pictures of that..

Re: Tachometer question
Heres the tach pictures showing the back where it tells you 6Cyl or 8Cyl . Ive only seen a few that had ink stamps, most are designated on the tag like the 8 cyl version shown here.

Re: Tachometer question
Thank you very much 60-66 for the photos and the knowledge. I need to dig out my originals and see if I can ID them now. Great information here.
Take care, Tom

Re: Tachometer question
I know this post is a little old, but...
I can understand the redline at the upper range of the scale, but what's the purpose of the pointer at the lower end of the scale? Don't go any lower in high gear to prevent lugging maybe? |
