Thanks Mike! I can't wait to see it put together. I did a teak oil finish, I've only ever used linseed oil as an oil finish but linseed oil doesn't have UV protection. The teak oil does according to what I read. I wanted something that can be easily re-coated if it gets scratch or gouged over the years. It really brought out the grain of the wood. I think it's going to be my new finish or choice for wood projects. And now I have a router table so maybe there will be some more projects in my future.

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
Finally
Still have to get holes drilled in the side boards and then go about getting the strips installed, and the gas filler neck put in. Also was still having issues with my anti rattle strips on the windows. I had used urethane window adhesive in the channels and since there was no rubber in the channel I think its sitting down just a little too far that the metal channel is catching on the rattle strips. Considering putting a spacer under the glass in the bottom of the channel to hold the glass up just a little higher and then putting in new urethane. I would welcome any suggestions if anyone has a better idea. Just one of those pesky things with getting these trucks sorted out. |

Yeah Baby! Lookin' like a truck! Stoked for you! Had a similar problem with Yeller, The driver's side channel on the window rolled in too far, and the rubber hooky over part was snagging the regulator. Sliced that dude off, up and down like a bandit.

I'm not sure I know which hooky part your talking about without looking at it. I'll see if I can figure that out when I get home. I would love for the fix to be an easy one. I already pulled the driver side glass loose but if I could avoid having to do that on the passenger side I would be a happy camper. I have some 1/4" steel rod and I'm considering cutting off a couple pieces to drop into the channel to space the window up a little higher in the channel because it's really only about 1/4 that is pushing up on the rattle strips. |

Ok, not the channel part that the regulator slides on, the "fingers" that the glass nestles into in the window frame. Not needed below the top of the door case. They're a bit oversize, and come around and snag the regulator. Tape them back and try it.

Oh now I get what you're saying. Will do. I reglued the glass onto the channel this evening. I'll trim the rubber on the seal when I put it back together. Thanks for the tip!

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
I'm sure it will be a huge help. It was definitely hangin' up there big time before I pulled the window out. I hadn't even thought about that being an unnecessary part of the seal that could get cut out. But makes total sense. My bigger issue was the window metal channel pushing up on the anti rattle strips when I cranked up the window because the glass was too far down into the channel, and it was distorting the anti rattle strips and tearing loose the felt on the inside. but I'll know if I got that fixed tonight hopefully. Thanks Chip!

For anyone who has been checking in on progress lately would love to hear opinions on side mirrors. Trying to decide between west coast JR. Or the tripod style just wanting something that doesn't shake and that are good for towing. What do ya think?

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
Just one picture to post, still have to bolt bed wood down. Work has been demanding so I haven't had much time work on the important stuff like getting the truck done
We got the green machine's AC charged up. And it started getting too cold to keep my hand held in front of the vent by the time we were done, so I'd say the Old Air Products system was a good way to go. Summer is almost over here in KC so likely I won't truly appreciate it until next summer as I don't see having this thing back on the road until September if everything goes as planned. Been working in the interior finishing up piddly stuff, got the windows working right thanks Chip for the advice trimming the window channel rubber worked great and was able to get the passenger side fixed without pulling the glass. I had a plan for my radio set up but I didn't like the way it was working out so I decided to go another route with a Retro Sound unit, they're selling refurb units on ebay for a pretty good price, and I've been installing that in the 30 minutes or so I've been getting to work on the truck every few days, Bed wood this weekend and should be able to start prepping to paint the front clip and get a bit closer to putting this project to bed, and this truck back to work. |

Even if it's not boiling hot anymore this year I figure it will at least allow me to run at highway speeds with the windows up and keep cool. No fresh air vents anymore, other than the windows so going to need it even when it's warm. I'm really hoping I can be done and drive it to Nats. As much as I have piled into my weekends between now and then it's starting to look more like a long shot, the front clip might be in primer if I do. Do they have an unfinished class? And I'm definitely not going to have enough time to cut and buff, so no laughing at the runs in my clear |

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB
Wanna make sure it's good and safe before I do and will do my best to make it happen.
Got a little closer to that end yesterday. Getting the wood installed, so far so good. Still have a lot to get done but I think the hardest part is done now just the boards in the middle and I should be about finished with the bed other than getting the light wiring connected. Nothing is tightened down yet going to get everything in place then hit them all once I know everything is going to fit. Any one have any idea if there are actual torque specs for these bolts? I'm guessing just a bit tighter than snug, because I don't want to distort the strips or body parts. Last edited by KSWes; 08-18-2014 at 04:05 PM. Reason: typo |
