The best advice I've received as a newbie welder, and the best I can hand out came from Bomp...
Take time to practice and spend some time warming up when you do jump in...

I do body work/panel welding for a living, you don't have to be a skilled welder to do panel/patch welding. You have to patient and take your time. It essentially nothing but a bunch of spot welds then you in return grind away.

What are you using to grind the welds away?

I use a sanding disc on a 4" grinder, what to remember is taking just as much caution and time not to warp when your grinding as you do when you weld. I use a combination of a wet rag and compressed air to cool as I weld/grind.

Re: Bigru's 65 Project "Bone"

Passenger side is done, new inner and outer rockers, floor and cab corner . It took me a while but I got it done. Hopefully the drivers side will go a lot smoother. I also set the gaps before installing the Rocker. It's a good feeling when you do it yourself, thanks for the motivation guys. Y'all make it look easy, lol.

Finding a perfect cab is almost impossible. Not sure how much rust you have to deal with but from here the cab looks to be a solid start.

I've welded for years but have learned a ton from watching Jody at Weldingtipsandtricks on YouTube.

Hope this helps.

Looks good! Biggest thing is to make sure you only grind the weld and not the metal around it. Otherwise you'll thin it out, burn holes in it and keep chasing it trying to fill them up. I'm sure I'm not the only one to learn that the hard way! I feel like I have more control grinding the welds down with a cut off wheel and finish with a 2" disc on an angle grinder.

Thanks and that's all I'm trying to do.

Small update, I finish both sides floors, kick panels, inner and outer rockers. I cut out the low hump yesterday making room for the High hump then on to installing the BBW. I will post progress pics later. Still have a lot metal work to do, I'm trying to decide if I want to attack both doors or just buy the aftermarkets. Both doors are rotten on the bottom.

What are y'all using between panels on high humps? It looks like some type of gasket material was used between the spot welds.

Are you referring to the upper piece...not the bolt in housing? I'd just use seam sealer personally.

How about the lower piece? Were you able to find a gasket as I'm right at that spot and since it's bolt in hate to have it glued down with seam sealer?? thanks.

Hey Rudy,

I just found your thread. You are doing some fabulous work on your truck. It reminds me very much of my 64. I know your frustration on the cab rust. I have the opposite problem. My cab has top rot. The truck was from the pacific coast of Oregon and has ocean salt rot. I will probably do a complete top replacement in the future.

I got your PM. Keep up the great work.

Take care,
Tom
