Lower ball joints

I'm finally getting around to installing My DJM spindles. I've got everything off, the LCA trimmed for clearance, 1 coil cut off the spring, and figured I'd replace the ball joints while I'm at it. Everything is ready to go back on. I'm assuming you have to remove the rubber dust boot from the new ball joints to install them, If that is correct, how do they come off. I've tried to knock them off, but didn't want to force them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Lower ball joints

The correct way is to use a ball joint press.
You will need it to install the new ball joints.
But I have driven the old ones out with a sledge hammer and a well supported a-arm.
I have a piece of round pipe that I slip under the a-arm.

Re: Lower ball joints

I have a press, I just need to know if I need to remove the boot, press the ball joint in, and put the boot back on. Or just leave the boot on and press the ball joint in, boot and all.

Re: Lower ball joints

Remove the boot.
Since you are replacing them,... cut them off.

Re: Lower ball joints

How do they come off? I've tried to get them off but didn't want to mess it up. This is on the new ball joints.

Re: Lower ball joints

The boot on the new joint, correct? Just tap each side they should pop off. They'll but just as much trouble going back on

Re: Lower ball joints

They just press on.
The new ones should be loose in the box, not installed.

Re: Lower ball joints

Thanks a lot Keith. The new boots were pressed on quite a bit right out of the box. I just got them off, but it took quiet a bit of persuasion.

Here is a pic if the OTC kit, Most parts stores will rent or lend tools.
So much easier using this method.
