Upgrading headlights ?

FuelcellGuy has Halo lights on his truck. I have seen replacemnts for the sealed beam to upgrade to H4. My question is: Will any of the 7" replacement headlights work? Anyone upgrade yet?
I see some on eBay with and without the Halo ring ....

I used those on a '68 Camaro once. They worked just fine. I did have to modify the metal bracket that holds the bulb. The hole in the back was too small. I opened it up about another 1/2 to 3/4". Other than that, it was just plug and go.

I was loookin at these last night i wasnt sure if the camaros used the same dia headlight but i assume it would work if trucks used 7" \

IMHO, if you actually want improved lighting, you can't go wrong with E-code H4 lamps. They are direct replacements. For best quality, I would stay with known brand names such as Hella or Cibie, and standard 55-60 watt bulbs. The improvement in light output and beam control is impressive. Low beams have a flat horizontal cutoff and flare up on the right for road sign illumination. Highs are amazing. I've been running this type lamp in various vehicles since the early 1970s and as you can tell, I'm very happy with them.

Up grade your wiring as well. Double true if using high watt bulbs.

Go strait off the battery through a good quality relay. As few connections as possible. Stock your dealing with 30-40ft of wiring, god knows how many connections along the way and 30 year old hi/low switch. If you take a meeter and measure the voltage at the battery running and at the head lights with it running your going to see as much as 1 volt less .

Good advice Grim...The relay makes a big difference. I like the look of the clear glass bulbs. I liked 'em on my Camaro. I'm putting them on a GMC. Gonna go with the lucas style tri-bars.

I like Light! Got lots of Light on the DD burb. THen small headlights stink! was real use to my Hella H4's and Hella doesn't make a replacement for them 4 light deal. So Hella H4's ended up in wifes POS honda. Sub ended up with Hella Ralley 1000's with 100watt bulbs and then the high beams on the lights I run the Hella 550 driving only run on low beam. The 1000's are tied into the highs. I can override if I like.
I am still throwing around mounting the 1000's up top off the rack. They would work better but they are actually legal as long as they are not above the headlights. Problem is the arms on thos brackets are long and the lights heavy. They bounce a little.

The 75 has a set of BIG Bosch Driving you normaly see on Volvo White road tractors. They put out some light but nothing like the 1000's

440 watts of High beam is pretty impresssive. Only have to flash once to get folks to dim.....from half a mile LOL.

i'd buy the ones from rick's...i bought a set of 7" round lights from ebay and they were too deep to fit in the truck...i dont know what brand they are but they had the halo thing and would have required cutting the radiator core to get them in, so i bought teh ones that rick's has...

I have the bosch H$ conversions on my 69 with a realy, and holy crap are they ever bright, it is almost retarded the amount of light I get out of them, brighter then my dads 2000 silverado even

The ones on ebay are all plastic (totally plastic) and you need to make some minor mods. I don't know if all the brands are plastic but they feel weird being so lightweight in our trucks.

just a standard bosch 30 amp you can get them and sockets at almost any decent car stereo shop! We use them all the time for alarms and such!

Fire wall won't let me get to it from work but goto www.ck5.com and in the frums under advance Preveiws HarryH3 has done a nice write up on how to wire up AUX lights. It's not much different other then you swap the AUX lights for the head lights.


I personnaly like BOSCH 30 amp relays. Hella as a Very simular is not the same rebranded Relay. Bussman is not bad either. If your junk yarding hit the European row. You can usualy fine 2-3 in each beemer, Benzo and VW. You want one with terminals 85,86,87,30 if you look next to the terminals. Some might have 87a and they will also work. Watch out for the latching relays. Actully pretty cool once you figure them out. Most German cars use these for their dimmer.

<sniff> cant get Bosch lights here. Talked to a lot of you Great white north folks about them but they just don't seem to sell them in the states at least at the local stores. Hella you can pick up AUX lights at just about anywhere. Have to look for the head light conversion but they are around. NEVER see Bosch anything anywhere. I guess it doesn't help the Hella's US headquarters is just south of Atlanta either.

Painless wiring has a relay kit and so does Madd electrical (takes 2 relays, one for hi, one for low)

I didn't realize until lately that the H4 (Euro. spec.) headlights were generally unavailable in the US until fairly recently. And like some posters said, that Bosch lights are fairly rare. In my older vehicles, I always use H4 lights, and dump the standard 55/60 watt bulbs in favor of the 80/100's. If aimed properly, they don't bother anyone (except hi-beams which melt retinas) and are available at most speed shops where I live. Just don't buy the blue tinted ones. They reduce night vision, but are still better than sealed beams. I have a few sets that I will probably throw away.

One thing about the glass on the H4 lenses... If you live in a place where they use gravel instead of sand on the highways in the winter (like Calgary), you can expect to replace at least one lense every year.

3M has a tough, clear plastic film that can be applied to the lens to help save it from sandblasting and rock chips. I don't remember what it's called.....
