lower body trim

Just joined the forum. Looking forward to participating.

I got my dad's 82 this spring after he passed away and I'm fixing it up as a remembrance. He had it since new and it is still in great shape. I've switched wheels and tires and dropped it 2" since getting it. The attached is a photoshopped image of it with his company name taken off the door, the door molding removed and the Silverado logo removed. Its going into the body shop in the next few weeks for a bodywork and paint. Still trying to decide what to do but I think I'll leave it the colours dad had it. I want to get collector's plates for it and that requires everything to be stock or close to it (for example the wheels and tires were only allowed to be 1" bigger than stock and needed to be stock or period correct aftermarket wheels). i want to go with a clear coat paint and try to get better depth to the finish while staying with the original colour combination. I've got a 64.5 mustang convertible that is white with blue top and interior that is pretty close to the same colours, so it makes a nice combination.

I'm going to have lots of questions as I do the inside/outside but for now my initial question is about the black lower side moulding. I'd like to replace it with the equivalent using the existing clips, but all I see on the internet is the chromed mylar strip (with two black reveals). Does anyone know if the one I have is still available.

My interior door panels are in need of replacing (the seat on the other hand is original and has been covered since the day dad got it-the cloth is spotless). LMC and Coverlay both have what they say are non-accurate replacements. Does anyone make good reproductions of the originals or would I be better off trying to use a dye on mine to bring the colour back? Will a dye stand up to my arm on it?

I'd like to install buckets at some point but for now I need a centre console that sits on the seat to lean on and hold my coffee. Does anyone make one in original fabrics?

Welcome, and very nice truck. Sorry to hear about losing your father.

I've heard the guys fussing that the only trim they can find is the chrome version (RPO B85). I have not personally found the black anywhere either (RPO B84).

I support your thoughts about going base coat/clear coat. Our trucks were originally high solids enamel. I reshot mine in BC/CC because I figured it would give it more depth and durability.

It's been five years now and it still looks great. I never do much more than just wipe it off (hasn't been waxed yet) so I am very pleased with that decision.

I have the LMC door trim on my truck (Scottsdale trim level). I was disappointed when I took them out of the box, as they look blow molded and very cheap. However, by the time I got them mounted up and trimmed out (I re-applied the original black/chrome trim in the inset) they look pretty good and have been fine. In your case I would recommend you try saving those original door panels if at all possible.

Wait a minute....if your truck was a Silverado it should have had the chrome B85 trim on it new....

thanks for the reply. Nice truck. My Dad had about 6 trucks over the years and they were all red except this last one so I thought briefly about going red on this one, but the costs expand quickly once the interior needs to be done as well to match so i decided to stay blue. Great look though.
the truck is actually a Scottsdale. I'll post the SPID label later today. the badges are still on it but I was thinking of taking them off for a cleaner look (as per the photoshop). Do you think I'd be better off keeping them on?
Thanks for the advice on the door panels. I guess I'll try the dye on the original before doing anything else.

here is the interior. overall, pretty good shape. seat upholstery is like new except for the vinyl side on the drivers side bottom cushion, which has split due to flexure. I'd like to upgrade the appearance a bit with carpets, clean up the door panels, roof liner if available and minor cleanup on dash. Again, I can't stray from original much to get collectors plates. having said that, long term goal would be to install year-correct buckets and console. Does any one make good reproductions of these or is it a junkyard proposition? I'm used to working on my mustang where everything on the car is available as a reproduction or used, so this is new territory for me.

Ah - that makes sense.

Mine is a Scottsdale, too, which would normally come with the base grille and black side molding. However - I opted up to the 4 headlight grille (V22) and chrome side moldings (B85).

I suspect yours has V22 as well.

I always hated those emblems - the yellow trim is what I found so offensive. I noticed when I removed mine five years ago they still had black paint in them (covering the yellow).

I've looked for that trim too. There are lots that are close, but nothing that is a perfect match, and I'd like something that will match my OEM rear corners which are still attached and in great shape. Let me know if you find something that is a perfect match!

I thought about using the Silverado trim, but don't think it would look right on a beige truck. Really holding out for some Scottsdale trim.

Keith-the truck was manufactured in Oshawa. I got that info from the VIN number but I haven't found a SPID label yet.
Randy-thanks for the info. I'll look at it further, but I'm hoping to find something that is attached by the existing clips instead of adhesive
WM69-thanks for the comments. I'd like to stay close to original on my trim if possible as well.

I did note that my trim has a clear film peeling off in places. Was this film part of the manufacturing process? will the silver discolour if the film is off of it?

It is not part of the manufacturing process (ie, there was not a protective temporary film over the molding that was intended to be removed after installation). That's the trim itself coming apart.

Technically, it should be replaced. You might try hitting it with some 3M Adhesive Spray and see if it will stick back together.

There are a couple things you can do, if you are interested:

a) Since your truck was manufactured in Canada you can contact GM of Canada Vintage Vehicle Services and they can provide you with the original option content for your truck.

b) You also could contact the GM Heritage Center archive, and provide your VIN (and $50) and they will return the actual invoice for your specific truck, complete with option content and pricing.

Wow, beauty of a start you've got. Great color choice in my opinion Looks alot like the "Wrangler" model paint job they had in Canada here. Keith, Thanks for that piece on original documents. Ive got a 77 that is going to be the same plan as a original and have some of the original paper work. i posted in builds :/..Thanks to all the forum users, Ive learned and found out alot of great info already

thanks 86W. i've had a few people tell me i should change color if i'm painting it so i appreciate the vote for keeping it.

does anyone know if my moulding would have been glued on from factory or attached with clips. i can't tell and don't want to pick at it to find out. Keith, did you say there was an option to go to the chrome moulding for the Scottsdale? If so, I could go that route and still replicate original options. I think it may work better given the pin stripping I want to add resulting in fewer strong horizontals . I'll photoshop it and post for opinions.

The side molding is adhesive. There are two strips of 3M double sided tape; the red backing was pulled off and the molding applied to the side of the truck (positioned with a fixture). You'll want the molding a little warm (like 90 deg) so it's soft and the side of the truck needs to be cleaned, like with an alcohol wipe. The truck also passed through a roller which applied pretty substantial pressure to the side of the truck to squeeze the molding on (aka "wet it out").

The only mechanical attachments were at the rear corner pieces on the box. Some earlier model years also may have had a clip in the wheel "cove" areas (in front of the rear wheel and behind the front wheel) but mine did not.

Check out my build thread for the fixturing I used to line mine back up (page 5 or 6 ish, and page 8).

Yes - you could get the chrome side molding on a Scottsdale.

Black (B84) was for Custom Delux and Scottsdale. You could opt up to chrome (B85) on a Scottsdale and then it came standard as part of the Silverado package.

On my invoice the B85 Chrome molding was included as part of the YG3 exterior decor package.
