Solid wire welding w/o gas?
I'm done with flux-core welding on the 110V Lincoln, but haven't pulled the trigger on the changeover yet. Until then, can I run a solid wire without gas? This is for sheet metal work only and it doesn't have to be pretty.

wont work you have to use flux if you dont use gas

flux you have to change the polarity on the welder and reverse it if you use solid so cant be done

When you are using flux core wire, the flux in the core vaporizes and shields the weld puddle from the atmosphere. When you are using solid wire you need the gas to shield the puddle from the air. With no shield, it won't work.

The gas simply dissipates the O2 in the air so that the weld can cure properly. The Flux in Flux core wire does this in place of an external co2/argon supply.
