Transmission brake question

Soooo.... my transmission brake is super loose and before I get the truck on the road (so far I've only moved it a few feet in my driveway), I'd like to know more about the transmission brake this truck has.

Such as: when is it on?

Is it engaged when it's forward toward the dash, or back to the seat?

It doesn't seem to be working in either position, but if I know which way it should work, it's a step toward the repair.

Do you mean the parking brake? When I hear transmission brake, I think of the the trans brake for racing that puts you in between gears to launch.

Yes I believe the OP is talking about the parking brake. The C30, and bigger as well as some C20's had the parking/emergency brake mounted on the rear of the SM420 trans, with a lever up thru the trans hump to the right of the shifter.

When the lever is pulled back towards the seat, the parking brake should be engaged. Then squeeze the lever and push it forward to release.

I think he means this style, was used on the 3/4 ton(maybe) trucks and larger... I don't recall if it was standard or some option... :

Woogeroo, I did an advanced search prior to posting (on 60-66 thread) but didn't see any info on the correct "engaged" position. The link you provided is helpful.

I messed with the brake some more and looked at the brake mechanism itself. Should the tension gradually set in, like a rear drum park brake, or does it "clasp" in place? Right now it seems to clasp-in-place, but it doesn't return with a snap when disengaging. Also, in both positions, the handle is wiggly. That isn't normal, is it?

The trans mounted parking brake should engage gradually just as the parking brake at the drum on the differential. The harder you pull on the lever, the tighter the brake grips. To my knowledge the lever does not 'snap' back, it needs to be physically moved. Then again, I have not had the opportunity to use one that was fairly new.
