i bought a 1972 sierra grande and have ?'s
its a 402 big block th400 truck with ac, ps, pdb factory gauges am/fm and a tool box built in the bed. its black with white trim and has the same color scheme hounds tooth interior. here's my questions, the truck was parked in the late 90's and what's the best stuff to put in the cylinders thru the spark plug holes to make sure it doesn't break a ring. is there a code anywhere to find out if it has a posi rearend and the passenger door acts like its locked but wont open from either the inside or outside(what's the cure for that?).. thanks for any help.

Re: i bought a 1972 sierra grande and have ?'s
G80 is code for posi on spid label inside glovebox door. I've heard marvel mystery oil in the cylinders is a good oil to free up pistons. Lil squirt in each one and pet sit overnight

Re: i bought a 1972 sierra grande and have ?'s
Take the interior door panel off and you should be able to see what the problem is. If your new to this pull the panel off the drivers door and see how it all works, pretty much self explanatory.

Re: i bought a 1972 sierra grande and have ?'s
The SPID actually has two columns and you cut off the right side.
But looking at it, the right side is going to be A11 tinted glass. Then probably G50 HD rear spring to go with the G70 leaf springs on the next line on the left. Since a J70 brake booster follows the truck was not a factory G80 positraction truck. As far as the cylinders go let it soak for a good while (I like Ed's Red http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...6&postcount=61 ). Its been setting years and overnight often isn't enough. Use a spray bottle to completely mist the cylinder walls so it washes all down and around. Don't even think of firing it up until you can turn it round and round with the plugs out by hand.

Re: i bought a 1972 sierra grande and have ?'s
Sitting that long.....was gasoline in the tank?
My truck sat 10 years from 1994 until 2004 and even though it would run, it had little power and would cut out once I stopped at a traffic light. I am in the process of making my own fuel lines as the carb and gas tank were full of fine rust. (Gas tank has been renewed (patented process) and the carb rebuilt). |

Re: i bought a 1972 sierra grande and have ?'s
I drove past this truck for years and thought about stopping and trying to buy but I heard he wanted big money for it. We hired a guy at work that also happens to be his neighbor and got him to call about it. The owner said he still wanted to sale it and It was ok for me to drop by and and make him a offer. Heres the funny part, it was used on his old time cotton plantation as a service style truck(one of the biggest and oldest ones around these parts) at one time it was 12,000 acres and is about to turn 300 yrs old. The title is registered in the plantations name. The other kicker is I bought it for $760 bucks. Taught me a lesson about hesitating about stopping to ask about stuff instead of listening to hearsay...lol

Re: i bought a 1972 sierra grande and have ?'s
We agreed on $700 but his wife got involved after the hand shake and money/title we're exchanged. But I was happy as a lark regardless of the extra $60. I just hate I rode by it for so long without stopping.

$760 is a steal, as others have said. I'd love to see a full picture of the SPID, looks like interesting options.

Re: i bought a 1972 sierra grande and have ?'s
I'm no mechanic but my truck had the same amount of gasoline in it. The advice I got here was to drain the tank and check for rust.
After draining and removing my tank, I found it COATED with flash rust. It was quite a mess. After much consideration and forum discussion, I elected to take it to a local radiator shop where they "renewed" it. I then painted the outside with primer and top coated with "hammered silver." The carb I had rebuilt with a NAPA kit and the mechanic said (and yes this is a direct quote) "I wish I had taken a picture because I have never seen so much fine rust come out of a bowl." That mechanic suggested I replace the fuel lines or "you'll be back in here for another carb rebuild in two weeks [of driving]." I am halted right now working on my house but I still think I can finish making my new lines once I get started back with a will. Your mileage my vary but that's my plan: whole new fuel system. Oh and when I removed my old fuel lines...FULL OF RUST. Good luck! |

Re: i bought a 1972 sierra grande and have ?'s
Actually that was a great score. That was a top of the line truck in 72. If it still has the am/fm radio (I couldn't tell by the pic) the radio by itself is worth about half of what you paid for the whole truck.
