Re: 1970 C20 long bed Duramax, Allison, on a 2003 4x4 chassis

The front being one if the main concerns for wanting to use the 2500 donor. This is an option, but only assuming the mating point where the factory weld has the same width and height of the frame rails between a 1500 and 2500. If that makes sense, it sounded much better in my head

With all the time and Money I have in this truck I don't think I could get enough for it to make me give it up.

Wow, great work you've done here! You sure know how to paint too. I really like the new needles and your gauge cluster. Very nice, and very well executed swap!

Do you have a youtube account?

I will soon be combining a 2007 2500 HD extended cab long bed and a 68 GMC cab. The plan is to shorten the frame up under the cab, and make it a stake bed truck. I plan to tow and use the truck. It looks like you could have set the cab lower if the bed fitment wasn't an issue. Any thoughts?

Yes, if you don't have to worry about the bed lining up and trim the bottom edge of the back of the cab you can lower it about 2"

It required cutting the hump out of the floor where the original front seat mount attaches to but other then that it was easy. Leg room is a little tight but I'm 6'1" tall and fit pretty comfortably.should have plenty of room for the 4speed

I just wanted to say that your truck is awesome and if you did not live 2000 miles away, I would love to see it personally! You have any more pics? Have you driven it yet? Sorry for 101 questions, but I am in the planning stages of a similar frame swap with my '69 GMC 3/4 ton crew cab truck. Hardest part is trying to find a suitable donor for a reasonable price, even wrecked/abused/rolled over Duramax powered trucks in my area still command stupid amounts of money!!!!! I was told at first to not waste my time doing a frame swap, just adapt a Duramax and axles to the old frame. Problem is, the newer trucks drive SO nice compared to the older trucks and my plan is to put some serious family miles on this thing pulling my 27 ft camper over the next multiple years! After seeing this thread I have decided to go with my original plan, which is exactly what you are doing! I have attached a pic of my ride that will start to undergo the same treatment come next summer! Thanks for the thread, looking forwards to seeing more updates!!!

I love the crew cab and wish I could have done one vice a reg cab but the original truck I started from has been in the family since it was new so I wanted to keep as much of the body as possible. I have a few smaller items to finish, wheels/tires, stereo, Bed liner, and such. Once that's done I will take some final pic's. If there is anything specific you would like to see pictures of let me know and I'll get them emailed to you or posted.
With doing a reg cab I was lucky and could use a reg cab donor which are harder to find but much cheaper. I picked mine (rolled over total) up for $2300 . I found it on COPART auto auction. Be careful when shopping for totals, these year chevy/gmc frames are usually bent if there is a front end impact. The frame horns have a weak spot right behind the front shock towers. Can usually be straightened or replaced but look for it so you know going into it.

I'm down in Astoria about an hour from you. I am attempting a similar build. Mine is a '71 long bed. I will be swapping all the parts to the truck frame. I would love to see your truck in person some day.

Re: 1970 C20 long bed Duramax, Allison, on a 2003 4x4 chassis

I plan on doing this same thing with a 5.3 truck. I have based most of my plans off of your build. And was wondering on your headlight switch behind the dash how did you mount it. And was it fairly simple to wire the headlights off of the new harness. Any advice you could give would be nice. I bought a 2002 Silverado 1500 with 85000 off a old man. The plan is to put my 1972 blazer on that chassis it has had its first frame off finished about 5 years ago with 44 inch boggers and a 454 now I just want something easier to drive long distinces.

How did you buy it off of Copart? Do you have a dealers license, know someone with one, or work a deal with a dealer?

You can register online on their web site. If you are not a dealer, you can bid upto a $1000 without any deposit. You can only bid/buy vehicles with a salvage title. If you need to spend more than the $1000, you have to put up a deposit equal to 10% of the total you will bid. Pretty easy, you can follow online and bid online for the auctions. Only need to visit the yard if you need to look at what you are trying to buy...

I've been hunting copart for a long time. What do you mean by only vehicles with a salvage title? You mean the ones with an "S" next to them? What does the "E" mean?

Re: 1970 C20 long bed Duramax, Allison, on a 2003 4x4 chassis

How did you attach your light switches to the back of the dash? I wanted to just copy it, but I have factory air. I have a big vent hole where you attached you headlight switch. I made a bracket to bolt under the dash kind of like the panel you have that holds your A/C vent. I was also planning on using Vintage air. Is the A/C switch panel a new piece, or is it the 1972 panel?

All of the 2003 switches are held in with high quality 2 sided tape. You will have to do a little modification to the face plates of the switches so they sit flat on the back side of the dash.
The AC heat controls are stock. When you order your vintage air buy the kit that is for factory controls. It will come with the electronic actuators the stock controls.

What lock cylinder did you use for this? I am wanting to do something similar with my build but my donor came with no doors. However, from what I see the lock cylinder is actually in the handle portion. Is that what you used? You removed the lock cylinder from the door handle and installed in your door?
