What to pull a sway bar out of????
Hey guys, my work is about a block from my local pick-n-pull junk yard and I was considering going over there and snagging couple of sway bars for my 68. I have an 85 front x-member and suspension under it and the stock trailing arms in the back. I was wondering if there are trucks that came stock with sway bars that are a good fit for our trucks, and I plan on doing probably a 3/5 static drop how does that effect the bars I need to select? Thanks guys.

Re: What to pull a sway bar out of????
73-87 2wd trucks had front sway bars as an option, and I have had decent luck finding them in my yards, try to get the biggest you can find. The smallest is 7/8 of an inch then to 1-1/8 and up to 1-1/4 inches I think.
On the rear you will have to buy something or retrofit something, I have read something awhile back about a 90's camaro rear sway bar working with modifications, but am not sure how much is involved. |

I got my 1 1/4" sway bars out of 73-87 towtrucks. I dont have a rear bar yet so I am unable to speak to that point.

80's-early 90's Camaro rear bars work well. I actually have a Hotchkis rear bar for a Camaro setup on my trailing arms. I got it used, but I think its for about an 88 Camaro.

Re: What to pull a sway bar out of????
From what I've read here the 3rd and 4th gen Camaro rear bars are the same but get from the better package like the 1le if you can find that one or Iroc or just z28 they are bigger like the 3/4 and 1 ton bars are bigger for the trucks that is the one for the front. Jim

Yah, I had been looking at sway bar kits from summit etc, but they are over 100$ each, I can get a used one from the junk yard here for $26.

I got my sway bar from a 76 c20/30 camper special. Its a 1 1/4" unit. I have a 4\6 drop and used the lowered sway bar mounts from Early Classic Enterprises.

Re: What to pull a sway bar out of????
Front: 84ish-87 1 ton crewcab longbed Chevy or gmc. Pretty sure those had the biggest sway bars of all. You'll need the rubbers and the brackets to accommodate the bigger diameter bar.
Rear: 3rd gen camaros for sure possibly the fire birds or trans am's get the rear sway bar from one of those camaros with the brackets that mount to the body and the brackets/rubbers from the rear axle. As for mounting the rear camaro sway bar to your truck; I would weld some beads in the seam in which the two stamped steel pieces come together to form a trailing arm (for added strength, not nessscary) then drill holes in the trailing arm for the brackets that clamp the rubber bushing for the bar on both trailing arm. Then mark out where the brackets should be on the side if the frame rails and drill your two holes and bolt it up. |

Re: What to pull a sway bar out of????
Has anyone used the sway bars from a Trans Am?
The local bone yard has an 85 there with both sway bars on it. They look like they might work. There going on my 67 SB step side. Thanks so much, Jake |

Don't know about the front, but the rear would work.
