Primer color
Was wondering if anyone can tell me what the original color of primer was for our trucks? I am posting a couple of pics that show a red primer under the paint. When sanding it there is nothing but metal underneath. I have used paint stripper on it and it will take the top paint coat off but really doesn't not do much with the primer.
In the places under panels where the original (I think) color is there is red primer under that as well. Any ideas? Ron |

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think the cabs and bed sides all had red oxide primer and the hood and fenders were black primer originally.

Thanks XLCOR 65. The primer they used is some pretty tuff stuff. I do think you might be right as the hood and fenders were like a black/gray speckle.

Yes, the factory sealers were pretty darn tough. Genuine patina trucks consistently show the pattern of red oxide on the cab, doors, and cowl, while black on the hood, fenders, and box.
