1974 4x4
Hello all! I am now the proud owner of a 1974 Short bed 4x4. Pretty clean so far. I have been on the 67-72 forum for a while.
I know most of 73-87 parts are interchangeable, but the dash cluster and the doors are what I am concerned with. I have done a little research and it seem to me the 73-80 are the same but change in 81. Is that correct? The dash cluster that is in the truck seems to be to big and won't fit in the opening correctly. I don't want to buy the wrong doors either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Re: 1974 4x4
The cluster bucket doesn't really fit well. You have to insert the left side first and rotate and jockey it into the opening. They're all that way.
If you already have gauges and don't want to seriously rework the wiring you're looking for 73-75 clusters with the mechanical oil gauge and Ammeter. If you're going from Idiot lights to gauges you already have the oil pressure warning lamp wire. The easiest swap is then the 77-80 cluster with the electric oil pressure and volt gauge. The 77-80 clusters have KMH on the speedo and the earlier year speedos went to 100mph. NOTE: Some 1980 were the 81-91 tan fonts and 85mph speedo and some were white and blue like the 79... the only way to tell is look. 76 is an orphan with mechanical oil pressure and Volt gauge. You only want one of these if you have a 1976 or want to do away with the Ammeter on your 73-75. In very rough terms... Cabs and noses are 73-80 & 81-91. Some but not all 79 & 80 models could have an orphan square headlight radiator support and grille. If you want to use the original interior panels... 73-76 then 77-91 for the doors. If you're looking to update to power locks and windows then you'll want the 77-91 doors.

Re: 1974 4x4
That is some awesome information. Thank you very much.
I think the actual gauge cluster is correct, I think the face plate(for lack of better name) is wrong. I have factory gauges and want to keep them and have them work correct. I will look for a 73-75 cover and hopefully be able to fit the cluster in correctly and then just rebuild it. The door question was due to a post that I read and said the pillars were different so I didn't know if the doors were also. You cleared up a lot of questions. Again Thank You for taking the time to reply. |
