Patina Questions

I just bought a farm fresh 68 Fleetside. Sun has blistered most of the new off of it. Black with red guts. I want to keep the 46+ years of scars and bruises and bring the under carriage and interior to show room new. Just my vision. Like me looking out of these 55 year old eyes. Everything looks the way it's suppose to, until I look in the mirror.

Wow thank you guys for all of the responses!! I actually got finished painting my truck a nice navy blue today and I love how it looks!

Like many I enjoy both nice paint and faded with a few scars on it. An original truck that has survived the yearly battles with nature is pretty neat to look at, but now at shows it seems they all look the same with coys/boss wheels, lowered to the ground, and an ls transplant. They are nice trucks, but it seems like every build has the same theme. Now I actually find myself searching the "just bought a new truck" thread, or even seeing what people are parting out because they seem to have more variety in their condition. Usually plenty of patina on the ones heading for the chopping block.

The patina is definitely a trend, but I'm sure enjoying it while it last.

The cool thing about having a patina truck, is when the time comes to paint, I've got a great place to start. Minimal rust, solid but faded original sheetmetal.

Pink can be very cool! I'd drive the below truck with pride any day!

I like the patina trucks because they show that the truck is a survivor. I think of it as a badge of honor. A truck that worked hard but was still respected and taken car of is a rare find even in the right climate.
A truck is a tool just like a wrench or hammer when used properly and taken care of properly it will last indefinitely. Some guys just want the truck they road around in with there dad or grandpa when they were 10... a little rust included.

My thoughts exactly. I love my "patina" truck because it reminds me of the trucks we had on the farm when I was a kid. Nothing looked new very long and nothing worked harder than the trucks we drove, except my Grandpa.

I like both patina and paint, but patina is more practical....and in most cases it has more character than a $10000 paint job and ridiculous graphics...

I restored a 68 RS/SS Camaro awhile back. Basically ordered parts from the Camaro suppliers and looked up the paint code and put it back together mostly stock. When I went to car shows most of the people were like me, parts catalogs or scrounging swap meets to put it back together as close to original. With a 5 thousand dollar paint job on it I got afraid to drive it in fear of it getting scratched or wrecked. The only place I felt safe is parked next to another car at the car show because I knew he wouldn't door me. The Camaro ended up sitting in the garage more than it should of. It was like a painting on the wall, looked awesome, but I didn't want to wreck it. Well, ended up selling it. My wife bought me the 68 and I drive it everywhere. The best part is being able to drive it and not worry as much because it doesn't have a show paint job on it. Still get just as many " thumbs up". Heck, We even lean on it and actually use the bed to haul things and as a " beer recycling garbage can" at times! To each his own but as for know, I'm loving it!!!

I look at it like this, when I paint it its "done" no more hauling stuff making the truck no longer a truck.

To each his own. Both have their own appeal. But perhaps I am showing my age when I say that isn't "patina" just a fancy word for faded? That's what we used to call that look. Just sayin'.

with mine i wish icould have left it orange patina but i need to replace the fenders so no matching patina anymore. but im going to look forward to a nice shiny paint too.

I have both shinny paint and patina paint on my trucks. I agree, with the Latina paint most people tend to drool over it. I like shinny, but always worry about door dings and inconsiderate people at car shows.

Since all of my "pretty" paint jobs seem to be a target for people that don't care what their own car looks like, I can't justify spending a ton of money on a good paint job. I think patina looks great on a lot of trucks, but not all.

To me patina looks unfinished. I have seen some trucks with patina that I would leave alone but if I want to see patina I can go out in the field and look at Rusty or Butch. I dont go to car shows to see what looks like a Walmart parking lot. Every car and truck I have ever owned has had " patina", I just called it damage. I am ready for a shiny paint job.
I guess that is a lot of it, a lot of people who like patina have had shiny, maybe they drive new cars too, so to them patina is "different". I have had patina all my life, I am not going to do all the work to restore a truck and leave it looking " junky"!
