97 cc 454 cranks but wont start
1997 cc 4x4 dually.
I have owned for 10,000 miles with no major issues. I got in it today and drove a block then it died like someone shut it off. Cranks but wont start. I got it home and in garage. fuel pump cycles and has 58 psi I pulled a plug it has spark I have sprayed starting fluid into intake tube and it makes no difference. It has oil pressure while cranking The fuses for ecm and injectors seem good The plugs are wet when pulled. I am unsure if wet is from starting fluid or gas. It also has an oil spot the size of an old record under it but in the 10 months I have had it, this has happened every now and again. about 4-5 times. While screwing with it, it did start and idle very rough for 3 seconds then died. I am luckily off work this week but desperate to get this fixed, thanks in advance for any help. |

Re: 97 cc 454 cranks but wont start
nope none at all. It has 107,000 on it. I had one with 157,000 last year and rebuilt the engine and 2000 miles later a drunk driver destroyed it and my lower back, but that truck would at least run like crap.
I didn't hear any noise but I'm about to pull a valve cover to see if rockers are moving then if they are go to timing chain cover and see if it has jumped time. As far as I know it is stock. |

Check distributor. I had the same truck and after sold it the gear on the dizzy went bad.

Re: 97 cc 454 cranks but wont start
a buddy also said check distributor, I saw no way to get cap off with upper intake off. I just got in from garage.
Upper intake is off. I took distributor cap off. It looks very wore. The rotor was loose and the plastic under it has a ton of brown build up and is tore up from being loose. When turning engine over the distributor turns over with no catches. Not saying there isn't a gear issue but it looks ok. I am going to price a distributor and just a cap and rotor. My buddy said there could possibly be little tracer marks from spark jumping around. I didn't see this but the plastic looks pretty rough. |

Re: 97 cc 454 cranks but wont start
I replaced the dizzy in my 5.7 with one of those aluminum ebay units with red cap. It cost less for the whole shebang than just a cap from GM. It's performed flawlessly, I'd recommend updating to one of these if you need a new one.
