Straight pipe from the cat back

I installed a Flowmaster cat back some years ago on my 97 Tahoe. It was not loud enough for me but it still sounds ok, however, I would like to go louder.

I found a few YouTube videos of some with straight pipes from the cat back and they sound great. Having the cats in there helps tone it down a little.

I found this on ebay and thought about using it with a couple of turndowns. It should dump just ahead of the rear end.

Has anyone done a setup like that? If so, do you have pics or video of it?

Thanks for your input!

Re: Straight pipe from the cat back

When I first got my 99 C2500 CrewCab off EBay, it was advertised as having a new exhaust. Did not know that meant new pipes from the cats back and no mufflers. It was way to loud for my liking and they existed out the back. Having them dump ahead of the rear axle will even be louder but if that is what your after, you won't be disappointed.

Since your passenger compartment is above the rearend, don't dump them under the car, take 'em outside. It doesn't take long at idle for exhaust gasses to find their way in.

Re: Straight pipe from the cat back

I think it will be way too loud too. I have a flowmaster on my 97 out the back with 4" tips. Even that was too loud for the law. I got a warning in Tn.
They said they are getting many noise complaints and cracking down. I put small baffles in the tips, sounds much better now.

I'm now vacationing in the Daytona Fl area, and a guy came to talk to me about my truck. He said Daytona and other areas in Fl have been issuing tickets for excessive noise on vehicles and motorcycles.

Get an electronic cutout right before your muffler...then you can have your cake and eat it too.

Re: Straight pipe from the cat back

i did an 85 305 3.08 gears. it was a DOG. i made a single 2.5 inch pipe exiting after rear tire. HUGE improvement over single 2.5 into muffler single 2" exiting. it wasnt too loud but my friend did his 350 suburban the same but used 3" it was too loud. maybe my cat was plugged.
