Just looking for suggestions on how you would rebuild my 12 bolt with GM locker from my 77 K10. Axle, bearing, and gear manufacture? Paint or powdercoat the housing? Thanks for any input!

Here is a picture of my 77 Shortbed 12 Bolt which is powder painted to 60%
gloss. All stock parts where used. Larry

Depends if you want bigger tires and a lift or leave the truck stock.

Is something wrong with the 12-bolt now? Do you know what gear ratio it has and what you need?

I've always had good support from Randy's Ring and Pinion. Their Yukon R+P gears are as quiet as OEM. And they can fix you up with everything needed for the job including Timken bearings.

Several years ago I bought a brand new pair of 12-bolt axles from Moser Engineering for $245. I suspect they cost more now, but even $300 is a reasonable price. Randy's sells axles, too.

Guys this is a stock restoration. 3.07 gears. I plan on redoing the axles, bearings and possibly the gears but they look real clean so I may not. Nothing's wrong other than needing fresh bearings. They look to be burned up. The axles look a little mared where they were ridding the shaft bearings..

Yeah , you need new axles too.
Tom's Differentials Inc. also has good prices and quality axles and parts.
I'd be worried about gear whine reusing those gears , they'll need to be setup exactly as they came out to mesh into the same pattern.
Find your best local shop that specializes in rear axles and have them do the job - they'll also let you know if reusing them is OK.

If you're just doing a refresh and don't need to re-shim the diff or pinion, you should be fine !

Just a thought, they make bearing seal combos that scoot the bearing over, to ride on new metal. I found them on rock auto.

Jaysonb, I have heard of these. I wonder if there is enough meat on the stick to be quiet. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Paid $1200; sold for $1500 a few years later. Just a hint at the appreciation that was coming. Retired as a factory automation products salesman.
