Heater Hose Drivers Side of the block
49 chevy 3600. 216 motor. Has anyone seen where the heater hose splits by the water pump then dive down to the rear drivers side block? What is this for? just engine circulation?
Also anyone place a T in the hose and setup a temp gauge. |

Re: Heater Hose Drivers Side of the block
It's possible that someone might have put that setup on for coolant circulation at one time or as a pickup point where they thought the coolant might be hotter so as to get more heat out of the heater. Guys did strange things in the name of getting an engine to cool or get hotter coolant to the heater.
There is also the possibility that at one time it had a percolator type block heater plumbed into the fitting so the water would go to the bottom of the block and rise through the water jacket of the block to heat the engine. Since it is probably a local to you truck I see that as a real possibility.

Re: Heater Hose Drivers Side of the block
I was thinking block heater as well but that hole over there isn't very big unless its into a freeze plug. I have seen some curious things on these trucks over the years so nothing would surprise me.

Could have been for an Lp Gas vaporizer which uses engine coolant to vaporize the gas so it can be mixed in the carb. Never know.
