Camaro rear end?

I have been pondering the idea of putting a posi rear end in my 1970 c10. At one point someone had mentioned to me that many Camaro rear ends would be a fairly easy swap. I came across this link and was wondering if this is a feasible solution: http://houston.craigslist.org/pts/4881149781.html
I know this is only a 10 bolt, but I am not putting out any ridiculous amounts of power. I have a freshly rebuilt 350 with vortec heads, mild cam, and a 4 speed muncie. If this is not what I should be looking for, then what? I am not looking to break the bank and don't mind taking the time to rebuild something. Wouldn't mind switching over to disc brakes in the process either. At the end of the day I am looking for a posi-trac rear end without spending a ridiculous amount of money. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Camaro rear end?

There should be lots of used c10 rearends w/posi kicken around out there. that would be the easy way and probably about the same price.

Re: Camaro rear end?

You will have to do a lot of fab work to get that to fit. Cutting off perches and welding on new ones. New shock mounts need to be fabbed. There is no provision for a pan hard rod either.

Also... if you do find a 12 bolt out of one of these trucks in a bone yard... chances are the Posi-traction unit will be pretty much worn out and need new clutches anyways.

Just do yourself a favor and spend the bucks on an Eaton Posi-traction unit to put in your existing truck 12 bolt. It will be the best 400 bucks you can spend on your truck. After you spend the money on that 10-bolt, fab everything up. you'll be into it for the same money as putting in the Eaton unit.

You couldn't pay me to switch to a late model 10-bolt.

If your truck already has an 8.875T rear, what most folks call a "12 bolt truck" it's easy to upgrade it to a posi rear. A differential has 7 moving parts, they aren't difficult to change the carrier from an open to a posi so why mess with a swap? Drive Train Specialists has an Eaton posi for your truck for $420.00. You probably need the shim kit to get the backlash right but that's another 30.00 or so. The only other thing you need is the chassis overhaul manual to guide you through it. That's another $30.00 from motorbooks.com

Re: Camaro rear end?

Well explained. lot of work to get something in there that doesn't want to be there. Doable, but not much fun. Emergency brakes are another hassle.

Re: Camaro rear end?

Don't forget the camaro will have a 4.75 bolt patern. Truck is 5 on 5. Gasoline71 nailed it.
