Looking at a used air compressor
Does anyone have any tips when looking at a used air compressor? I'm going to look at a 60gal Farmhand this weekend. Other than turning on, what are some things to look for?

If it's a piston-type compressor, check the crankshaft and flywheel to make sure they're true, and check the condition of the belt(s). Also take a look at the oil in the crankcase. If it's a no-maintenance compressor, there's not a whole lot you can check out, except to see if it runs. I looked it up, and it appears Farmhand is made by Campbell-Hausfeld, which is a pretty good brand. |

Great thanks, the rust does worry me. Should there be any rust at all?

Re: Looking at a used air compressor
You can't avoid some rust in the tank, air has moisture in it and it drops out in the compressor. Let it run a while, at least to full pressure. Then wait for it to cycle so that you know the pressure switch is working. Some pressure switches are adjustable and you want to watch that it doesn't go beyond the rating of the compressor. If it does it may have been set higher and overworked or may just be worn. It should cycle on and off at the same pressures each time. Also check voltage. Many don't realize that there is 208 and 220 volts at different areas and the difference can be enough to cause overheating problems.

Re: Looking at a used air compressor
On compressors look at CFM@Y PSI. This is the part that does the work.
Look at motor RPM, lower is better. 1750RPM 240V is better. |
