9 inch with 3.25 axle tubes?

I just acquired a narrowed (58") Torino 9 inch with the flat top axle tubes. It has Moser 5x5 31 spline axles but the axle tubes are the thick 3.25" and was wondering if anyone had installed the thicker tube rear end into a trailing arm rear suspension that previously had 3 inch axle tubes. Can it be done and what will I need to modify if anything?

Thanks in advance

i installed one from a 75 t-bird. not sure if it had the larger tubes or not, but either way it shouldn't matter, just buy some new perches. if need be you can grind them out to fit.

Re: 9 inch with 3.25 axle tubes?

I think the question here is, will the stock u-bolts fit over the larger 3-1/4" diameter axle tube. That is where my question would be.
I am also thinking there will be a gap on the topside of the axle tube between the u-bolt and the flattened top tube. The other question would beif the u-bolt fits over the tube... will the u-bolt fit thru the holes on the perch/trailing arm or will they be widened too much.

Re: 9 inch with 3.25 axle tubes?

Thanks for the replies.
I was told I could grind off a small amount off the axle where the ubolt goes over the axle tube and use the stock width ubolts but would prefer not to do that. Ive ordered new perches, I'm making my own lowering blocks but is there enough room in the trailing arm to get a slightly wider ubolt thru?

Talking Re: 9 inch with 3.25 axle tubes?

most heavy truck repair facilities have a CNC "U"-bolt bender, you give them the radius of the tube, the can bend you a set, you'll have to figure how long you want them though, think it cost me like $30 for a set made up, nuts and washers included.
Have a good one!

Re: 9 inch with 3.25 axle tubes?

I think our issue is going to be getting a u-bolt to fit over the axle tube and still be able to fit thru the holes in the perches and trailing arm.
