H pipe question
I did a search and I still have one question...I noticed that the consensus of opinions is... paint the exhaust and run it awhile to let the paint burn off...and put the h where it stops burning off...how long is "awhile"?
I posted this on the engine and drivetrain and got no response. I tried to delete the post over there but had no permission?? |

surely you jest? I am not going to run that truck for a couple of hours just for that. I'll just put it 12-14" behind the collector. a couple of hours would cost me $$$ on super unleaded... not to mention fill the shop with carbon monoxide!

i read in john lingenfelders book that you can put he h pipe anywhere between the headers and the muffler. i got mine far enough back to that i can drop the tranny without any interferance.

I've always heard that you should get it up as close to the front of the engine as possible. Of course, for most of us that means trouble for dropping the tranny. I also understand that the position makes a difference on the noise level.
I like the paint idea. I think I'll try it when I have my crossover put in. Maybe I'll call some exhaust shops this afternoon. What have you guys paid for someone to graft a pipe into existing duals?

the flowmaster kit I got was 36.99 out of Jeg's. I ordered it from O'Reilly's got it in 2 days compared to a week or so. it is removable, just cut out 7.5" of pipe in the desired location and comes with clamps. I may weld in the "T" sections and use the clamps on the center section to aid in tranny removal(which I hope doesn't come up soon) but if the exhaust is already dualed it shouldn't be too difficult.

They're on Ebay for about $15 unless you have to have stainless.
Oh, yeah----------------- you have to run stainless 6 hours before installing the "X"

Are you using a good aluminized pipe, like most good exhaust shops sell? If you are then why paint it? It looks good as is. You can clean the aluminized pipe with steel wool and it looks good for a long time.

Man that worked
I was mainly putting in the H-pipe to tame my Spintech Pro Streets... and I have to say it worked. I can't really tell if it added any torque or not...I put this setup in the 70 with 3.08 gears(temporary until next weekend) and the setup was in my 71 with a 4.11 thats a big difference. I will notice a difference when the 3.73's get in there but I doubt I will have any seat of the pants memory by then. I haven't driven the 71 in about 5 months.
But it did change the exhaust tone! and thats what I was after. I installed it about 19" behind the collector, I couldn't get any closer because of the pipe configuration I had. falls right behind the th400 crossmember. |

is it true?
I went to a local performance muffler shop this afternoon to get an estimate to reroute my pipes a little and install an H pipe. I was told that they'd gladly take my money, but that an H pipe on a small block chevy is redundant as the engine exhaust is internally balanced. Any comments?

Ooohh Yeah, good catch. It goes through the manifold. Granted the hole is smaller, but it is close to the source.
