how much HP with new intake and carb??

I have a plain jane 350 in my truck and am looking for some ways to get some more power out of it. Right now it has heddman headers with a true dual exhaust and magnaflow xls. I was thinking about a edelbrock intake and carb. What kind should i get and how much Hp would i be looking at gaining. Is there anything else i should do before the intake and carb that would help?

Maybe 20 Hp, I would Upgrade to HEI with a good tuneup. If you are like most of us seeking more power you will want to upgrade the cam eventually also. My 2 cents....

how much $$ am at lookin at for the intake and carb, compared to the Hei setup? Also, later with a cam, what kind of gains am i lookin at there?

I bought an intake and carb (performer rpm intake and a 750 electric choke, and got a free chrome air breather) all as a package deal and i paid right at 450 shipped.

I also bought a accel dist, cap, ignition module and super coil and paid right at 200.

Hope this helps you out.

I say that HEI should be your first step. Worry about the intake and carb after you have good spark. My .02

What he said, along with the tuneup. A new carb really won't improve over your stock Q-jet if it is functioning properly. Q-jets are great carbs when they work well, and if yours is fine i would keep it. An intake might add 15 or so HP, but i am by no means a dyno expert. And of coure a mild cam would also help out.

Depending on engine combo you have, Heads and such, if this is a run of the mill 350, low Compression engine your best bet for more performance will be Cam & Lifters, Intake & carb on a totally stock motor, maybe 10-12, and my self I would much prefer the QJet carb. The HEI won't really help in adding HP but will help as far as better tunability, Junkyard Distributer should be around 35 - 58 bucks. If these are the stock low compression, everyday cast iron heads, look at a set of either GM Vortec or the GM Fast Burn heads, not real expensive $500 - $600 and these will help, should get a far better rush with these then intake and carb will. For a cam with a little more enthusiasm and keeping a relatively street driving capability try Comp Cams XE 256 or XE262 . Just a not on cam selection it is what you have for the rest of your combination that count on what cam you need. Flat tappet Cam & Lifter kit should think less than $150.

Been there done that. Best bang for my buck was the HEI. It was so much better after that. Then came carb, intake, and finally headers and exhaust. The real difference in power came when I put new heads and a cam. Then she was ready to roll.

If its street driven only and your not trying to turn max rpms then I would look into another set of heads. The HIPO (ya right) 305 heads (casting # 416,601, and one more I can't remember) have 58 cc chambers and will definetly bring it alive. You will probably need to run 89 or better octane but its worth it. You can find these for as little as $50 a set. Add another $30 for a gasket set and your ready. After that I would look at the cam. If and when you decide on a cam stick with something small. Look for a lift figure under .480 and a duration (at .050 lift) no more than 214 degrees. This will give a nice sound and increase power tremendously. It will even help with fuel milage if you usually turn 3000 rpms or so at cruising speed. A stock intake is actually pretty good. A good running quadrajet is a great carb, its better that the holley's and edelbrocks if its tuned and operating correctly. Just my 3 cents on the matter.
