Inexpensive exhaust system?

Is anyone here aware of a somewhat inexpensive exhaust system that I can buy slowly but surely, over time? For an 87 350 2wd truck. Something that I could install myself, like the ball and socket types. My exhaust is starting to rot off of there, and I could really use a new one.

I've been looking around but they seem to want quite a lot of money just for some hollow tubing. I was hoping someone here might have run across something out there, as you guys seem to come up with all kinds of websites I had no idea existed.

Here the local shops are cheaper than mail order. You can't order the parts for the price they charge out the door.

I always buy the dyno max kits for around $120-150. Summit and Jegs sell the same kits I believe.

For stock replacement pipes, use the Walker catalog below to find only the ones you need. Walker lists the 87 2WD pickup as R10/R1500, nomenclature that was used by Chevy and GM from 87 to 91. http://www.walkerexhaust.com/catalog...catalog-lookup Start by clicking on "Light Duty Truck" in the middle of the screen.

As mentioned above, a local muffler shop might be cheaper depending on the work you need, but they will use "crush" bends, whereas the pipes above are mandrel bent and less restrictive.

I've seen a few trucks with the pieces from Auto Zone used. Seems to work as well as anything else, you can get parts as you can afford and go bit by bit.

I would have a exhaust shop fix all that is wrong with your exhaust now,Then save up and buy whatever exhaust kit you want in the end.

I usually just get the shop to make the part I need,go on a slow day and usually just a cheap cash deal.The rest of the exhaust i just bought some u-bends or 90,s or whatever I need and make my own,plus you,d be surprized on the stuff they throw away from mistakes,I,ve gone dumpster diving and found lots of good stuff for repairs or whatever

I've done that a few times behind a local muffler shop. Picked up some perfectly good take-off pipe sections, as well as some lengths of straight pipe.

However, they recently put up a fence around the back! Guess they must be selling it by the pound as scrap, or maybe they occasionally use some pieces themselves.

Well thanks for the recommendations all. I'll take a look at each recommendation individually, then go with the cheapest! heh

Anyway, I may as well move on to my next related question. I have the old dinosaur giant catalytic converter still on there. Would it benefit me in any way, to buy a high flow mini cat? And would just any old mini cat do? Is there any real difference between them besides inlet and outlet size?

I know I want a cat because the fumes are bad now, as it is. Don't really want to make it a lot worse by not having a cat.

I installed a Summit brand system for a friend a couple years ago, square body long bed, duals, nice quality stuff that had a good sound.

A CAT reduces NOx, probably not fumes you can smell. If fumes are bad, your carb may be too rich.

In Texas, for vehicles that are over 25 year old, you can get Antique Vehicle plates that require no inspections at all. The fee is only $50-something every 5 years.

I bought my exhaust system from the cat back at at auto zone and it fit pretty good , it was a stock type system .

Its fuel injected. The old TBI stuff

And I don't have much of an inspection, its $11 and no sniffer test. I was just referring to the fumes for my own sake, sometimes if I need to let the truck idle or run for a bit, like at my house, the fumes get pretty bad.
