Tax Value = Outrageous!
So, I get my annual tax and tag fees for my 71 Super Cheyenne and my eyes about popped out of my head. Really? Appraised value is $9000 for this wore out rusted POS! I can't wait to get the one for my Buick Grand National...

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
Wow that sucks, I didn't know some states charge tax every year. My home state charges a flat 6% property tax when you register the car plus yearly tags. I got a Historic plate for my truck so the yearly fees are only about $10.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
When I went to Title my '72 C-30 here in Virginia last year, the lady said the truck is listed at a value of about $6,500 !! I had heard ahead of time that a Bill of Sale would be necessary too prove the current value and made sure that I got one from the seller along with the Title when I bought the truck. With that proof, I only had to pay Sales Tax on $2800.
The County Property Tax, in my case, is then reflected from that DMV value. I would call your Tax office and try to get it adjusted.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
There's a county tax and a city tax. If I lived outside of the city, there's no city tax.
DMV quit allowing you to just say "I paid $500 for the vehicle". They got smart because everyone was telling them they bought the car for cheap so they didn't have to pay more taxes on it when they bought new tags.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
Just to add a little extra, I only have to pay Property Tax because my truck is listed at 10,000 GVW. If you have a 1/2 Ton here in Virginia, the Tax is either Zero, or very little, depending on the value of an older Pick-up.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
Also, the state of NC links your state inspection to their office via computer. They know if you haven't done a state inspection on your vehicle. If you haven't got it done...you don't renew your tags.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
I am not sure of how they get their appraised value numbers. Apparently, from NADA or Kelly Blue Book. A bill of sale won't work anymore.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
Ouch! One time permanent registration for vehicles here in MT that are ten years or older.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
I would still try to fight it. If you actually had a $500 piece of junk, it wouldn't be right to get taxed $9000 on it. If nothing works, contact your State Senator on it. Even though your tax bill is not that expensive, it would be a case of Principle here.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
I can see if they actually done an appraisal on vehicles. However, someone might have a $30,000 restored truck but someone else might have a $500 POS. Both would be appraised at $9000, most likely. I should contact the tax office and see what they base the value off of.

Looks like a pretty nice truck. Sheet Metal looks pretty good.
I also have a '72 C-10. I get a lot of compliments on it and your truck looks better !!

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
Our DMV doesn't charge by appraised value as such. Initial fees are set by the purchase price, and reduce each year as the value decreases. But on commercial plates, there are weight fees to go with registration fees etc. Several years ago my reg. bottomed out at $49 annually, then the fees started increasing each year. This year it was $164.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
ONE good thing about Maryland, with it's high taxes, is you inspect only once at change of ownership and get charged 6% sales tax when titling, based on stated sale price at a minimum of $200. It may be a bit higher now, but no bill of sale as proof required. Anything that old you just say $200 and pay $8 sales tax. Tags renew every two years and you just pay registration as long as you own that car...or transfer over to family member.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
Here in New Hampshire they go by the original manufactures MSRP, it cost me under $100 for all fees to put my truck on the road.

Appeal the appraised value. My 67 is only "valued" at $800.

The more time you spend complaining here the more likely you are to get that changed! No wait, I'm wrong about that, your just wasting your time.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
Wow----I always thought NJ was bad. After reading this I feel better. We only pay sales tax based on purchase price when you register/title the vehicle, plus the registration and title fees. Sales tax is 7% and I think registration and title cost me $150, but thats it. Registration for an historic vehicle is a one-time thing, no inspection required.

Re: Tax Value = Outrageous!
I'm not sure what they base it on here in Utah, but my '68 costs $68 to register. Wish it worked out that way on my 2011 Dodge Avenger
