Painted Bumpers

My front bumper is white and my rear bumper is whatever behemoth that is (took it off today and it weighs about the same as the bed). Does anyone know if the bumpers were painted off the line or chromed (or perhaps chrome was an option)? Were both front/back painted or just front?

Trying to decide whether to keep this back bumper. It weighs a lot and I'd actually prefer a roll pan but still deciding.

That's a busy bumper you have there. Not sure how useful all the misc. add-ons are for you, but a utilitarian step bumper is a million times more work friendly than a roll-pan or sport bumper. If you are seriously considering not having any bumper, then box access is obviously not a concern.
Finish wise, the bumpers were either chromed or painted depending upon how it was ordered. Frequently though, no rear bumper was installed on the line and a regional utility bumper was fitted at the dealer. These came in many forms and most often were painted silver.

Ya its tough to tell sometimes because there were so many dealer-installed options, 3rd party outfitters, and just outright aftermarket stuff.

I've seen a handful of the really wide step bumpers with the boxes and hitches etc from the Canadian Pacific railways trucks. Most of those were painted white to match the white grilles.


On the rollpan note; I think rollpans look really good on the stepsides, but I think the traditional "short" bumpers look good on fleetside trucks. I don't like the utility step things unless its actually a work truck, or on the 4x4/lifted customs/flatbeds or the c20/30

Cool bumper you have there. I'm pretty sure that I'm in the minority for liking them though. I wish I could find a solid/straight one like that around my parts. The added fold out step is too cool!

Well it is a C20 so I do want to keep a 'work' type bumper but this thing is so heavy... for now I'll probably just repaint it silver and put it back on.

At some point I have to get a new hitch anyhow as the current one has support mounts where my new gas tank is going so I may pick up a standard chrome one at the same time. I'm still deciding whether to keep the grill/front bumper white or to go chrome. Not sure it would look right to have the back chrome and the front painted.

The extra weight adds traction. lol And besides...you won't have to worry about that boat anchor falling off the way they bolted them on. lol

Aint that the truth. Sucker took me two days to get off because someone decided those bolts weren't good enough and weld a few lines on the top and bottom of each side. Plasma cutter couldn't really get that angle so I had to sit there with my little cutter.

I run painted in front and factory chrome in back. It doesn't look too bad. If you think about it, a casual observer seldom sees both bumpers simultaneously.
