Rubber nubbins in bed

OK this has had me wondering for some time , what are these rubber nubbins inside the bed by the tailight stake pockets ?

Maybe there is a screw back there and those hide the hole .

My '87 does not have that.

I would suggest that it is not factory.

I am tempted to pull one off to see what's behind it , hopefully its not a self destruction device type thing , its strange that there is one on the other side in the same location .

Perhaps the truck received aftermarket rust protection? That was real popular for years. Company would drill holes and spray in rust preventer and then fill the holes with rubber plugs. Ziebart was / is one such major company that still does this.

That was on camper special trucks years back to access a wire for the lights on the camper I believe. Take the tail light out and pass a wire through for tail and brake lights on a slide in camper.

Well I pulled one of them out and it actually a plastic plug , its about a 3/8'' hole , there is one on both sides .
